This work will entail using extremal graph theory for multigraphs as well as tools from abstract algebra to investigate conditions under which a mitochondrial network is dominated by a single giant connected component, and to characterize the groupoid structure that describes both single and multiple connected components of mitochondrial networks. In addition to the abstract mathematical component, the work will also involve incorporating published data on mitochondrial graph structures and simulating distributions of network morphologies by random walks along a groupoid transition diagram.
