RN Operations Coordinator, Special Care Nursery

The Operations Coordinator for the Special Care Nursery provides operational and administrative leadership support to ensure the efficient daily functioning of the unit. This role partners closely with the Operations Manager, Clinical Managers, SCN leadership, and the interdisciplinary team to coordinate staffing, workflow, quality initiatives, and resource management. The Operations Coordinator helps maintain a safe, supportive environment that promotes excellence in neonatal care and staff engagement.

Operational Leadership

* Assist the leadership team and charge RNs with daily oversight of SCN operations, ensuring appropriate staffing, patient flow, and resource allocation.
* Serve as a point of contact for staff and ancillary departments to resolve operational issues in real-time.
* Monitor unit supplies, equipment, and maintenance needs; coordinate with Materials Management and Biomedical Engineering as needed.
* Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of unit-based policies and procedures.
* Support onboarding and orientation of new staff members, ensuring smooth integration into the unit team.

Staffing and Scheduling

* Collaborate with the Leadership team to ensure safe staffing and maintain daily and monthly staffing par numbers
* Adjust assignments and staffing levels based on census and acuity.
* Monitor attendance, schedule changes, and timekeeping compliance.
* Provide input for performance evaluations, competency reviews, and corrective actions as delegated.

Quality, Safety, and Compliance

* Support and promote a culture of safety, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice.
* Assist in preparation for surveys (Joint Commission, state, etc.).
* Identify opportunities for process improvement and collaborate with leadership to implement sustainable changes.

Leadership and Team Support

* Serve as a visible leader and resource for staff on clinical and operational issues.
* Promote effective communication and collaboration among nursing staff, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams.
* Participate in leadership meetings, staff meetings, and hospital committees as assigned.
* Support staff development, engagement, and recognition initiatives.

Leadership Management

* Directly supervise and support assigned staff members, serving as a first-line leader for performance management, coaching, and professional development.
* Foster a positive and collaborative team environment through open communication and regular feedback.
* Participate in hiring, onboarding, and retention efforts.
* Support staff engagement initiatives and help ensure accountability to professional standards and hospital policies.

Manager-on-Call Rotation
* Serve as Manager on Call for the SCN on a rotational basis with the management team.
* Provide leadership support for after-hours issues, including staffing, safety events, and urgent operational concerns.
* Collaborate with hospital administration and other departments as needed to ensure safe and effective unit operations during off-hours.

Education and Training
* Support ongoing staff education by coordinating with the Clinical Development Specialist, Clinical Education Coordinator, and Nurse Clinicians.
* Ensure compliance with required competencies and certifications.
* Promote professional development and encourage staff participation in continuing education.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

  1. Graduate from an accredited school of nursing and licensed in the state of Georgia.
  2. Demonstrated proficiency in skills applicable to designated area within probationary period.
  3. Four (4) years of experience in nursing, with minimum of two (2) years in area of specialty.
  4. Demonstrated ability to set priorities, coordinates diversified and multiple activities, and make appropriate clinical and managerial decisions. Must possess advanced problem solving skills.
  5. Successful completion of a management course prior to appointment, or within six (6) months of employment.
  6. Certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
