Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Benefits Administrator I is responsible for supporting the day-to-day administration of employee benefits and leave programs at the College. This position ensures accurate processing of benefit enrollments, changes, and leave requests, while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as College policies. The role serves as a primary resource for employees and supervisors, providing responsive customer service, assisting with audits and reconciliations, and supporting benefits communications, training, and events. The Benefits Administrator I works closely with assigned College locations and the Benefits team to deliver accurate, timely, and compliant benefits and leave administration.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Administers employee benefit programs, including health, dental, vision, life, disability, voluntary benefits, retirement, and leaves of absence
  2. Processes and audits employee benefit enrollments, changes, terminations, and payroll adjustments to ensure accuracy in HRIS and vendor systems
  3. Monitors, audits, and reconciles benefit plans to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as College policies
  4. Coordinates with employees, supervisors, Local HR, and third-party administrators to ensure timely communication, compliance, and accurate pay and leave tracking
  5. Updates and maintains SOPs for benefits and leave processes
  6. Assists in the design, editing, and dissemination of benefits communications, guides, and training materials
  7. Conducts employee trainings and presentations on topics, such as, New Employee Orientation, summer enrollment, retirement, and leaves of absence
  8. Responds to employee inquiries regarding benefits and leave policies, procedures, and systems with a high level of customer service
  9. Provides support for special projects, open enrollment, vendor fairs, and other benefit and human resources-related events
  10. Assists with the completion and collection of retirement paperwork for employees retiring from the College or surrounding Independent School Districts
  11. Escalates complex matters for resolution when appropriate
  12. Assists with updating ACA health tables in the PeopleSoft program with the purpose of tracking medical benefits coverage and providing required reports to various government entities, such as the IRS
  13. Assists with testing for system upgrades and new processes being implemented to ensure the process flow is accurate and all data is processed correctly
  14. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and regulations related to employee benefits and leave administration, including FMLA, ADA, COBRA, and ACA
  • Analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Proficiency with business applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite, and human resources information systems
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, and adapt to changing program requirements
  • Ability to deliver professional presentations and training to employees
  • Ability to work independently with attention to detail, while also collaborating as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee information with discretion

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. May involve walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment, as well as a variety of specialized equipment generally associated with machining labs
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed both indoors in a climate-controlled office environment

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 1 year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), or higher
Salary

Hiring salary range is $48,152 - $55,375.

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education. Should you receive an offer of employment from Lone Star College, the resume submitted in the application process will be utilized to calculate your salary offer. The information outlined below will provide the Office of Human Resources everything needed to determine an accurate starting salary.
