Position Summary

The University of New Mexico, Office of the University Controller, also known as Financial Services, located on Main Campus is responsible for all central accounting functions for the University.

It is the responsibility of the Controller's Office aka Financial Services to ensure compliance with all financial policies, rules, and regulations adopted by the University or imposed by external agencies, including state and federal audit requirements, following generally accepted accounting practices. Additionally, the Controller's Office oversees the maintenance of the official financial records of the University.

Within Financial Services, the Controller Reporting department has an exciting opportunity for an Accountant 2.

Controller Reporting plays a vital role in preparing, reviewing, and distributing financial statements and reports that accurately reflect the University's financial position. It ensures all accounting transactions are properly recorded and comply with University, state, and federal policies. Acting as a key link between operational accounting units and senior leadership, Controller Reporting provides reliable financial data to support internal management, external stakeholders, audits, and regulatory reporting requirements.

What We're Seeking!
The ideal candidate is a proactive self-starter with exceptional interpersonal skills and outstanding organizational abilities. You should be adept at juggling multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, and maintaining a sharp eye for detail. Strong verbal and written communication skills, a commitment to excellent customer service, flexibility, and the ability to work independently are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Play a key role in the Financial Reporting team, specializing in governmental accounting and compliance functions.
  • Lead GASB 87 and GASB 96 reviews, decision-tree analysis, calculation files, and journal voucher preparation.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of, or the ability to research and apply, GASB standards and other accounting concepts to ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements.
  • Serve as a backup to FSM operations, assisting with weekly control reports and supporting month-end and year-end closings.
  • Reconcile approximately 15 indices and seven loan funds to ensure accuracy and timely reporting.
  • Assist with high-level accounting tasks and contribute directly to the preparation of audited financial statements.

This position will not begin until December 2025!

Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 12 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

Preferences should be supported in resume:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or BBA with Accounting emphasis
  • Experience working with UNM financial programs such as MyReports and Banner
  • Effective time management skills to prioritize multiple ongoing work tasks to meet deadlines
  • Experience communicating effectively at different levels of organization, both verbally and in writing
  • Experience effectively researching and analyzing to investigate discrepancies or questions
  • Experience in MS Excel to analyze/interpret financial data and prepare reports
  • Experience learning, understanding, and applying University, Federal, State, and Agency policies and terms conditions
  • Experience with governmental or higher education accounting, including reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
