Description

The incumbent in this position provides clinical support to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Duties include assisting physicians, providers, residents and medical students in the medical care of general obstetrics and gynecology patients.

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES 50%
Direct Patient Care:
A. Using the nursing process, renders competent nursing care which focuses upon a specialized segment of gynecologic patients. Assist providers in the performance of examinations, pap smears, endometrial biopsy, colposcopic exams, cervical and endocervical biopsies, vulvar biopsy, wound dressings and debridement, catheterizations, removal of surgical sutures/staples, LEEP procedures and paracentesis.
B. Dispensing oral medications and giving injections in a safe and accurate manner according to physicians and pharmaceutical/laboratory directives with minimal or no discomfort to patients. Utilizing the Electronic Health record, send prescriptions to pharmacies per physician directives or department policies.
C. Performs nursing assessments on patients in the clinic and on the phone. Assessments include anatomy and physiology, compliance, response to therapy, symptom management, laboratory and radiographic results, nutrition, pain, psychosocial, home care, patient resources, hospice and bereavement as appropriate to oncology office-based nursing.
D. Exercising sound nursing judgment in counseling OBGYN patients, pharmacies, medical facilities, etc., and explaining and/or supplementing clinical information, treatment plan, surgical procedures, etc., as presented to the patients by the attending physicians. Instructing out-patients in home procedure such as self-injections, self-catheterization, care of surgical wound, home care of LEEP procedures, and ordering appropriate supplies for patients' home care.
E. Determining medical emergencies via clinical data from patient telephone conversations, discussing such with physician or requesting immediate patient appointment for treatment.
F. Reviewing charts prior to patient appointment, to assure that recent dictation, laboratory and x-ray results, pathology and surgical reports are filed in medical records for the doctor to review. Obtaining and reviewing laboratory and x-ray results, charting values on flow sheets or in medical records and relaying accurate results to patients when appropriate.
G. Taking vital signsatregularintervalsoveranextendedperiodoftime,chartingvariablesandreporting irregularities to the appropriate physician when notable.
H. Schedulingofsurgery,monitoringlabresults,schedulechemotherapysessions,monitor patient post chemo with phone follow ups; triage phone calls for providers; schedule procedures and coordinate care for CT scans, MRI and other ancillary procedures and lab tests.

CLINIC SUPPORT ACTIVITIES 50%
A. Serveasaclinicalresourcetosecretarialandclericalpersonnelintheperformanceoftheirrespective duties and in coding medical diagnoses. Scan patient records into electronic health record.
B. Assist the physician with putting in charges in the EMR when needed.
C. Participate in undergraduate and graduate educational programs by providing nursing support when necessary. Participate in the in-service training of new and existing personnel.
D. Assist the Nurse Administrator in the development of policies and procedures, Ob/Gyn educational materials for distribution to patients and in the collection of patient data for clinical and research applications. Collaborate with clinical research team on all clinical trials.
E. Supervise medical students during the first part of a patient's physical exam as directed by the attending physician.
F. Provide telephone triage and information to patients.
G. Documents teaching, phone calls, and nursing assessments, interventions and evaluations in the electronic health record.
H. Washes,wrapsandsterilizesinstrumentsaccordingtowrittenpoliciesandprocedures.
I. Cleans and maintains adequate stock of clinical supplies in/for exam rooms.


Qualifications

1. Graduation from an accredited program for Licensed Practical Nurses.
2. Eligibility for licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
