Position Overview

The Principal Pathologist supports the delivery of clinically relevant molecular testing by providing operational and clinical oversight to pre-analytical specimen assessment, interpretation/reporting of molecular testing, and interpretation of associated clinical information. This position will serve as the Pathology point person to cross-functional teams across Exact Sciences involved in both internal and external clinical trial administration and management and will participate as a subject-matter expert for associated teams. This individual will also be a key stakeholder for the design, implementation, and execution of clinical trial-related Pathology workflows and sample management.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct day-to-day pathology responsibilities including, but not limited to, tumor estimate/sample quality review, documentation, immunohistochemistry results interpretation, and clinical report sign-out.
  • Act as subject matter expert concerning existing internal and external clinical trials and associated pathology workflows for Phoenix laboratory teams.
  • Support clinical trial program quality management for the laboratory, including standard operating procedure development and modification, event tracking, and communication with key stakeholders.
  • Serve as primary pathologist for assessment of tumor samples associated with active clinical trial workflows for neoplastic cell content and sample quality, as governed by validated sample requirements and approved study protocols.
  • Participate as Pathology representative and subject matter expert in clinical trial-associated program meetings, including but limited to: Biopharma business unit, Medical Development, Regulatory Affairs and Medical Affairs.
  • Provide pathology professional services; including, but not limited to, interactions with pathologists, oncologists, and other clinical providers.
  • Participate in periodic meetings with pathology team, histotechnologists, and select lab operations teams.
  • Participate in the development, optimization, and implementation of new procedures for pathology and histology function.
  • Support the pathology manuscripts, as required.
  • Monitor efforts with relationship to pathology and histology.
  • Work with external pathologists and laboratories to extend their knowledge and awareness of tumor profiling and biomarkers.
  • Develop relationships with key internal collaborators.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of the company's clinical laboratory improvement amendments (CLIA) issues, technology, biostatistics, and bioinformatics.
  • Identify need for additional staff in Pathology and develop long-term plans for the growth of the organization.
  • Provide tactical and strategic advice for the development of pathology science and business for the company, as needed.

  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, and pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • Board certification in Anatomic Pathology (AP), Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP), or eligible to become board-certified in AP or AP/CP at time of hire.
  • Possession of or eligible to obtain medical licensure in Arizona at time of hire and maintain throughout employment in position.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience interpreting next-generation sequencing and Immunohistochemistry.
  • Experience with clinical trial management as related to Pathology and Regulatory Affairs.
  • Demonstrated experience in digital pathology.
  • Subspecialty training in surgical pathology and/or molecular pathology.

Salary Range:

$180,000.00 - $306,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - AZ - Phoenix on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible.
