What Your Job Will Be Like

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking to hire a highly motivated Facilities Mechanical Engineer to support mechanical design & engineering capabilities for its existing portfolio of facilities and structures. The successful candidate will join and collaborate with a dynamic group of in-house architects, electrical engineers, structural engineers, interior designers and other mechanical engineers in the development, design, and construction of buildings and infrastructure projects to provide full-service in-house design services at Sandia National Labs in New Mexico.

  • Partner with other Mechanical Engineers to analyze existing and/or design new or modify existing HVAC and plumbing systems including building control systems.
  • Assist with analyzing existing and/or the design of plumbing systems and boiler/ chiller systems.
  • Conduct fluid flow as well as heat transfer calculations.
  • Advise on the repair of mechanical systems.
  • Develop scope of work, design fee proposals and design schedules for projects Act as a design lead to facilitate project coordination and deliverables.
  • Create, update, and implement technical system specifications for the design of mechanical systems.
  • Perform computerized modeling of mechanical systems.
  • Assess condition of existing mechanical building systems, equipment and site infrastructure and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Design new and innovative techniques and equipment to improve operations and save energy.
  • Conduct code compliance assessments and develop solutions..
  • Partner with other team members to develop project plans that integrate architectural, structural, civil, and electrical subject areas.

The selected applicant will be eligible for telecommuting, and they must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Salary Range

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering plus 5 years of experience in HVAC design.
  • Ability to produce Construction documentation utilizing Autodesk AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE L-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

  • NM Professional Engineering (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate and able to obtain a Professional Engineer license within 3-years.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, REVIT or SolidWorks design and drafting skills, MS Office Software skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete high rigor tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working in a team environment with the ability to develop and nurture internal customer relationships.
  • Ability to plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion.
  • Experience with mechanical system, cost estimating, and project management software.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following:
  • International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 62.1, National Mechanical Safety Code, Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards, Life Safety Code, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Architectural Barriers Act.
  • Design building and infrastructure mechanical systems including building control systems.
  • Maintenance requirements for mechanical systems.
  • Analyze system drawings, construction plans, and system one-line schematics.
  • Facilities engineering, design and construction, and industry standards/ practices.

Facilities Design and Engineering, designs for campus development, and provides engineering support in all disciplines, including energy management for Sandia National Laboratories. By effectively providing all design and engineering services, we deliver a sustainable campus that protects the workforce, stimulates employees, fosters interaction and creative solutions. The in-house studio is aligned to partner customer needs to design projects that proactively support the customer and the corporation.

The primary focus of the group is to work on low risk and low complexity projects with a value of $1K-$500k to enable current-day and future mission success through collaboration. We strive to accomplish these activities in an efficient, flexible, safe, collaborative, and cost-effective manner while creating a work environment that helps attract and retain the best employees to support the objectives of Sandia, Department of Energy, and the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Security Clearance
