Job Description

The City of Renton is looking for park enthusiasts to fill our Parks Maintenance Assistant positions within the Parks and Trails Division of the Parks and Recreation Department. The successful candidates will enjoy working outside in all types of weather, be team-oriented, willing to learn, capable of using different kinds of equipment, and provide excellent customer service.

The schedule can vary depending on the assignment and may include weekend and evening shifts. The scheduled shifts include 5/8's, 9/80's, and 4/10's with varying days off.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare parks for daily use including, but not limited to, picking up litter, trash, garbage, branches and other obstructions from City property; restock restrooms; cleaning picnic areas, play and park equipment, benches, tables and barbecues.

  • Operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment and tools such as sod cutters, pruners, rotary hand mowers, backpack blowers, edgers, line trimmers and park vehicles; clean and perform light maintenance on equipment and tools.

  • Prepare surfaces for painting - walls, fences, benches, tables and other amenities.

  • Prepare and grade terrain; apply fertilizers; seed and sod lawns; weed planted areas; transplant shrubs and plants; trim and edge around walks and flower beds; prune shrubs and trees; mow and trim turf areas.

  • Assist with preparations and maintenance of athletic fields for scheduled play.

  • Assist with boat launch operations at Gene Coulon Park.

  • Assist with swimming beach operations.

  • Perform a variety of grounds maintenance work in the following areas: athletic fields, trees, shrubs, flowers beds, and turfed landscape areas.

  • Assist with basic concrete and asphalt repairs.

  • Assist with basic construction tasks related to Parks Facilities

  • Assist with the maintenance of irrigation systems.

  • Operate light power equipment such as aerators, trenchers, and rot-o-tillers.

  • Perform preventative/minor repairs on equipment.

  • Close park facilities and lock park gates.

  • Assist with preparations for a variety of special events and activities.

  • Operate riding mowers and small tractors.

  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance, work evening and/or weekend hours as assigned.

  • Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.

  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.

  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as they relate to field.

  • Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of this classification.

  • Valid Drivers' License.

  • Successful passing of a required driving record check.

  • Successful passing of a required background check.

  • The following certificates are required within six (6) months of employment:

  • Flagging and Traffic Control certificate

  • First Aid/CPR/AED certificate

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.

  • Move throughout City facilities and buildings.

  • Operate a computer and other office equipment.

  • Communicate with City employees and residents.

  • Lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds on occasion.

  • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.

  • Climb and work from ladders, climb stairs, and aerial lifts.

  • Bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Exposure to hazardous materials, heights, and noise from equipment.

  • Work is performed within the right-of-way, and in high traffic conditions.

  • May be required to participate in a standby or on-call rotation.

  • Noise level in the field is moderately loud and noise level in the office is moderately quiet.

Recruitment Process:

The screening process will include a review of minimum qualifications and applicants selected for an interview will be invited via email to self-schedule a time through the Government Jobs account. At minimum, this position will be subject to a standard criminal background check and professional reference check. This position requires driving and is also subject to a driving record check from the WA State Dept of Licensing (or other state equivalent). Driving records will be evaluated based on a points system depending on the infraction and severity.
