Position Summary
The Advising and Recruitment Assistant in the Department of Public Administration and Policy advises current students in the Masters of Public Administration program on class selection and requirements to complete the MPA degree and recruits prospective students to apply to the MPA program through on-campus events, off-campus outreach, phone, email, informational webinars, and other methods of promotion and outreach. The Advising and Recruitment Assistant informs prospective students about potential career opportunities in public service, and advises current MPA students which classes are relevant to their career goals.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of the University's rules, regulations, and policies, and procedures pertaining to the MPA program and the Graduate School
  • Thorough knowledge of course offerings and requirements of the MPA program
  • Familiarity with trends in non-profit and public sector employment, at all levels of government
  • Ability to apply original and creative thinking to develop and improve methods and procedures
  • Knowledge of UGA systems and procedures for student admissions and enrollment (i.e. Slate, Argos, Athena, and Banner)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge and competence in computer skills, including Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff of our department, and staff from other University departments.
  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures and effectively communicate these to students and faculty

Student Advising

  • Meet individually with students to review program of study in public administration
  • Assist with course selection and make references to other academic programs and/or support services as appropriate
  • Assist students in their understanding of MPA degree requirements and plans or timelines for degree completion
  • Follow-up and reply to students' questions via e-mail, phone, or in-person
  • Conduct informational meetings to inform University of Georgia undergraduate students about the Double Dawg program
  • Participate in the MPA Socialization Seminar and other orientation events to introduce new students to the MPA program
  • Assist Department staff and faculty with special events related to the MPA curriculum
  • Advise undergraduate students in the Double Dawg pathway assist student planning for the MPA program application process
  • Create and maintain advising and course enrollment reports to aid Department in the course scheduling process

Duties/Responsibilities
Recruitment Assistant

  • Planning, development, promotion and facilitation of webinars and on-campus recruiting events
  • Speaks with students about public service careers that an MPA degree would allow them to have.
  • Participates in recruiting seminars or training from NASPAA, the MPA program's professional organization.
  • Plans and attends recruiting events on campus, and at career fairs across the region.
  • Recruits potential students through one on one prospective student contact, and through the organization, promotion, and facilitation of student recruiting webinars.
  • Conducts outreach to prospective students through one on one prospective student contact on campus"
  • Travels to UGA's Gwinnett campus for recruitment events, and regional events and conferences.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct campus outreach to inform undergraduate students about the Double Dawg Program and public service careers
  • Conducts campus outreach to organize recruiting events and course presentations
  • Track applications, contact applicants regarding application status, and respond to applicant inquiries
