The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities

This position is responsible for optimizing the distribution system through writing switching plans for the backbone of the distribution system and maintaining automatic systems to ensure voltage remains within regulatory guidelines, facilities are not overloaded, and customers are minimally impacted.

Other responsibilities include reviewing and approving substation clearance requests from Transmission for construction or maintenance activities, working with Distribution Planners on seasonal load transfers, and monitoring automatic systems for any needed changes. This position provides technical support to the Outage Management unit and fulfills on-call support. The position uses Distribution engineering knowledge and Switching and Tagging practices to accomplish these tasks. Applications the team uses include GE ADMS, CYME, PI, Oracle DOMS.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
  • Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
  • Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.
  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical, engineering and professional knowledge, skills and performance.
  • Support 24/7 operations by performing on-calls and storm duties as assigned.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Experience working on the distribution system or in a control room environment

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
