AES Indiana is seeking to fill a substation engineering position (Physical/Electrical or Civil/Structural) to work in our Indianapolis, Indiana offices.

The Substation Design Engineer will work on the design and implementation of substation projects for new and existing utility substations ranging from 13.2kV to 345kV.

The successful candidate will be tasked with the development and execution of utility substation designs, calculations, and studies. They will work either alone or as part of a team to design, review, direct, and support substation projects that vary in complexity and scope.

The AES Indiana substation team is a dynamic group that works together to solve problems quickly and provide reliable solutions for our customers and the community.

Key Areas of Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the day-to-day execution of projects within the substationengineering group.

  • Conduct engineering studies and perform design calculations for the installation of new and replacement substation equipment.

  • Perform physical substation engineering design including general arrangement, electrical plan and section view drawings, cable and conduit plans, grounding plans, raceway plans, shielding plans, and bus work calculations.

  • Create or review foundation and structural designs.

  • Develop bill of materials.

  • Evaluate geotechnical analysis information and apply it to substation designs.

  • Design or evaluate site civil plans specific to site grading, access, drainage, soil erosion and sediment control.

  • Create material lists and takeoffs from engineering designs.

  • Understand, follow, and apply industry standards to engineering designs.

  • Iteratively work to achieve best design outcome considering cost, project scope, constructability, and consistency with existing practices.

  • Coordinate design activities with other multi-discipline project team members.

  • Act as a representative of AES Indiana to the public and our customers.

  • Develop specifications for equipment and services.

  • Develop construction schedules and budgets.

  • Manage project documents and records.

  • Assist with equipment procurement.

  • Support construction activities with technical expertise and onsite technical direction when required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering

  • Ability to work as a team member, as well as independently.

  • A high level of interpersonal communication skills, with good written and oral communication skills.

  • Valid driver's license

  • AutoCAD software skills are preferred.

  • Professional Engineer registration or plan to become registered is preferred.

  • Previous electric utility experience preferred.

  • Assess and recommend solutions for routine projects.

  • Familiarity with electric transmission and distribution grid and systems.

  • Good presentation skills and ability to lead meetings.

  • Prioritize, plan, and perform assigned work in an organized manner.

  • Shows initiative and proactiveness.

  • Demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Mentor less experienced engineers.

  • Demonstrated competency in development and execution of strategy as well as in management of day-to-day operations.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively with others as well as operate with a minimum of supervision.
