The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University is accepting applications for an Associate Research Scientist (ARS) position in observational seismology. The successful candidate will conduct research in applications of Machine Learning (ML) to Seismology in the division of Seismology, Geology & Tectonophysics (SG&T). The ARS will be responsible for performing independent scientific research, preparation of scientific manuscripts, proposal development and preparation, and management of independent projects. Research is performed indepedently on a day-to-day basis, under guidance and strategic directions of the Lamont Research Professor serving as the Principal Investigator (PI).

Duties and Responsbilities include:



  • Performs independent research in observational seismology, withing overarching goals set by the Principal Investigator.
  • Disseminate results with the public via national and international conferences and seminars and with the general public via media outlets and outreach.
  • Prepares research publications and reports and contributes to: patentable inventions, important research techniques and/or theories that significantly impact the science.
  • The ARS will receive general supervision from the PI. Will function independently within general guidelines or as a research team member with project responsibilities.
  • Will collaborate with other members of SG&T on long-term planning and development.
  • Oversees budgets for private and government grants on which the ARS in principal investigator.


  • Ph.D. in Seismology area or equivalent terminal degree in an Earth Science closely related to Seismology required plus a minmum of 3 years of post-Ph.D research experience.
  • Candidates with experience in applying ML to seismological research are specifically welcome, but this is not a requirement.


The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled. Target start date is February 1, 2026, with some flexibility.

Initial appoinmtnet will be for 1 year with the possibility of renewal contingent upon performance and available funding.
