Job Summary

The Department of General Services is seeking two skilled and dedicated Heavy Equipment Operators to join our solid waste operations team. The ideal candidates will possess expertise in operating a variety of heavy machinery, including track loaders, dozers, hydraulic excavators, landfill compactors, articulated trucks, and street flush trucks. Successful candidates will work collaboratively in a team environment, adapt to changing tasks and priorities, and maintain a strong commitment to safety and attention to detail. This position also requires a willingness to perform manual labor and contribute to the overall success of the landfill operations.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate equipment to perform routine landfill operations, such as spreading and compacting waste, covering and burying materials, and excavating and transporting soil.
  • Construct and repair roadways, ditches, and implement erosion and sediment control measures in accordance with approved grading plans.
  • Perform manual labor tasks as required to support landfill operations.
  • Conduct general daily maintenance on heavy equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of related work experience in the operation of heavy equipment, reading construction plans, and maintaining grade and earthen structures, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:
  • Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N)
  • Stormwater and Heavy Equipment Certifications

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background check(s), to include criminal, fingerprinting, and DMV checks. Valid driver's license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification). If the successful candidate holds a CDL, they must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screen and comply with the Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program as outlined by Loudoun County's Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Policy for Transportation Employees.

Hold or be able to obtain Forklift Certification and Virginia Responsible Land Disturber Certificate.

Must be available to work a rotating schedule of Mon-Sat and Tues-Fri from 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM and 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Subject to recall or being held beyond the scheduled workday, and must be available to respond to County emergencies (24/7) as directed in accordance with Department policy and written or verbal directive. Work is primarily outdoors during all weather conditions.
