Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to employee success and we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Review more information at BNL | Benefits Program

The position being advertised is under the aegis of the US Genesis Mission at BNL, aimed among others at accelerating the quantum information efforts in the Nation. The mission is to address challenges facing scalable quantum computing and to develop novel and improved platforms for quantum computation and communication and thus strengthen U.S. leadership in QIST. This calls for expertise across disciplinary sciences - encompassing quantum information theory, physics of quantum materials - to develop new design principles for scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computing.

The specific focus of this position will be on the theoretical design of quantum platforms and models to improve upon existing error correcting codes, while leveraging platform-specific physics knowledge, be it in ultracold neutral atoms, trapped ions or superconducting qubits. This may also involve investigation of the decoherence processes and related question of persistent quantum entanglement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will operate in a friendly and dynamic team environment of the Condensed Matter Theory Group, with opportunities to interact with BNL scientists across disciplinary boundaries, notably the Co-Design Center for Quantum Advantage (C2QA) at BNL. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to conduct original research, disseminate results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. The initial appointment is for two years, with a possibility of extension subject to the availability of funding.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or related discipline is required within the last 5 years.
  • Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated and able to work both independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff is required.
  • Candidates should have proven ability for disseminating research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations.
  • Trained as a theorist in either condensed matter (CM), atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics or in quantum information theory.
  • Interested in quantum algorithm and quantum informatic research that cuts across the different subareas of physics.
  • Able to work closely and communicate effectively with colleagues focused on other theoretical techniques.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Some experience with quantum algorithms and quantum information science research.
  • Experience with theoretical frameworks for quantum entanglement and decoherence.
  • Desired, though not mandatory, expertise in quantum platform software such as Qiskit or cuda-q.
  • Numerical expertise with classical simulations of quantum circuits, including tensor-network based approaches.

Application Instructions:

Candidates are required to submit a Resume or CV and a Research Statement, not to exceed 3 pages in length. Please upload all documents at the time of application.

Other Information:

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $75000 - $81000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.

At Brookhaven National Laboratory we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Our benefits program includes, but is not limited to:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Care Plans
  • Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Paid Time-off and Leave Programs (vacation, holidays, sick leave, paid parental leave)
  • 401(k) Plan
  • Flexible Work Arrangements
  • Tuition Assistance, Training and Professional Development Programs
  • Employee Fitness/Wellness & Recreation: Gym/Basketball Courts, Weight Room, Fitness Classes, Indoor Pool, Tennis Courts, Sports Clubs/Activities (Basketball, Ping Pong, Softball, Tennis)
