Summary:

The Registered Radiation Therapist administers radiation treatments to patients under the direction of the radiation oncologist. The incumbent has the authority to provide patient care within the parameters of this assignment of responsibility, according to prescribed, delegated medical regimen and the hospital policies.

Responsibilities:

1. Administers radiation treatments to patients under the direction of a radiation oncologist to include, but not limited to: Obtains history and required data and evaluates for contraindicating conditions; Applies blocks, wedges, bolus and filters for shielding; Applies supportive and immobilization devices and equipment; Applies tattoos to mark point of beam concentration; Administers radiation per physician's prescription. Takes an active role is self-development.

2. Applies radiation safety guidelines and patient protection guidelines.

3. Provides emotional support, comfort, general assistance and information to patients.

4. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care based on the age of the patients served.

5. Coordinates or collaborates with physicians, team members and nursing staff.

6. Operates and maintains radiation therapy equipment, computers and other departmental equipment.

7. Documents to the patient record.

8. As assigned, provides instruction in the basic theory, technical skills, and application of radiation therapy procedures to other employees, new employees and students.

9. Knows and applies safety and infection control procedures.

10. Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.

11. Displays professional behavior.

12. Takes an active role in self-development.

13. Performs miscellaneous duties, as needed, to support operations and the provision of care.

Other information:
Education Requirements:
*Associate degree, Graduate of an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology.

* Certificate of Radiation Therapy.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • ARRT registered or registry-eligible (must pass registry within 6 months of hire).
  • BCLS Certification
