The expected hiring range for this position is:

$69,800.00-$100,133.00.

Fermilab seeks outstanding applicants for a post-doctoral Research Associate position at the interface of cosmic survey science and AI/ML. This position is aimed at exceptional recent PhD recipients with a proven research record from prior experience in observational cosmology, AI/ML, and/or related fields. Fermilab is actively involved in the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (LSST DESC). Fermilab is also the home institution of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and an institutional member in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). This post-doctoral position will provide the opportunity to integrate novel AI/ML techniques into the operation and analysis of world-leading astronomical observatories.

The position is for a period of up to three (3) years, with the potential for extension considered on a yearly basis thereafter. The position comes with a competitive salary and excellent benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Publishing scientific papers based on the analysis of cosmology data.
  • Pursuing studies of dark energy and dark matter with cosmic surveys
  • Integrating AI/ML into experimental operations and/or cosmology analyses
  • Presenting work at scientific conferences, workshops, and reviews.
  • Contributing to scientific activities at the Fermilab Cosmic Physics Center.

Qualifications and Essential Job Functions

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Astrophysics, or relevant subject.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including presentations to large international scientific collaborations and conferences.

HUMAN FACTORS: Mental Concentration, Sitting, Standing, and Tight Work Schedule.

In addition, the ability to travel by automobile and/or commercial air carrier both domestically and internationally may be required.
