This position is responsible for assisting the Outreach Laboratory Supervisor with the following duties: responding to internal and external customer inquiries, resolving problems with patient specimen collection and/or lab test ordering, coordinating activities that promote testing accuracy and service excellence, coordinating site workflow and staff assignments, achieving daily specimen turn-around targets, providing reinforcement to site phlebotomy and clerical staff, and assuring accurate data entry and documentation.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Covers the processing area at Outreach Laboratory sites, coordinates the preparation and packing of specimens for delivery to the clinical laboratory sites and monitors the send out bench for problem/missing specimens.
  • Serves as the primary point of escalation and follow-up for operations or customer service issues for their assigned Outreach Laboratory site.
  • Reviews the daily Expected List and collaborates with other Pathology Laboratory departments to resolve ordering errors, missed tests or other variances.
  • Assesses staffing levels at each site and makes appropriate modifications for coverage as requested by Supervisor.
  • Utilizes the Follow Up Worklist daily to monitor and rectify key service deliverables (e.g., missing diagnosis codes, missing order or patient information, patient re-draws, calling MD offices with results or clarification of questions).
  • Serves as backup support to Outreach Laboratory receptionist, registration, phlebotomy, and supervisory functions as needed.
  • Monitors and maintains adequate phlebotomy supply levels to support patient care needs. Maintains an organized and efficient phlebotomy area. Monitors patient flow, staff workflow, and activities of all modalities to assure smooth operations in the phlebotomy work area and non-interruption of patient services.
  • Assists Outreach Laboratory Supervisor with staff education regarding clinical updates and procedural changes.
  • Maintains an appropriate working knowledge of all Outreach Laboratory related and Health System information systems
  • Educates and advises Phlebotomists, ordering physician office staff and home health agencies on lab test ordering requirements and specimen integrity issues.
  • Assists in the investigation, resolution and staff education requirements for all SAFE/Occurrence Reports involving the Outreach Laboratory.
  • Performs phlebotomies and specimen collection on all age groups accurately and efficiently; following proper laboratory standards and procedures, responsible for precise labeling of all samples as dictated by appropriate standards.
  • Assists the Outreach Laboratory Supervisor with identification of process improvement opportunities, plan formulation, implementation, and plan monitoring activities.
  • Coordinates any special pick-ups or deliveries of specimens/supplies with courier team.
  • Responsible for identifying and coordinating preceptors for new hires and students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Three (3) years phlebotomy experience required.
  • Three (3) years of registration experience required.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification required.
  • ASCP certification preferred.
  • Experience in data entry and customer service preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and problem solve preferred
  • Strong communication and phone skills preferred

Environmental Requirements and Exposure Hazards: Potential risk of exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals. Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens; must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
