Introduction

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.

Required Documents:



  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or internship coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.


Eligibility Requirements



  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2026/2027 school year.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Description:

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) is seeking an Intern to serve under a Principal Structural Engineer.

Duties and developmental opportunities shall include:


  • Assist
    structural engineers with inspections and support the development of contract
    documents, including drawings, specifications, and design calculations
  • Design
    structural components, produce detailed drawings, and contribute to
    comprehensive plans and specifications for contract documentation
  • Gain hands-on experience in structural design by
    preparing structural details and developing plans and specifications for
    contract documents.
  • Learn the processes involved in advertising, awarding, and administering contracts during construction.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, manufacturers, and vendors while gaining practical hands-on experience instructural engineering practices.


Additional Job Functions:


  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:



  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.
  • Completed a minimum of two-years of Civil Engineering coursework including courses in structural engineering.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD drafting software preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills.

  • Applicants must be a current college student seeking a degree in Civil Engineering preferred.
