JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State is searching for a full time Special Relief Utility Operator - Grade 5 to join the team. Duties include:
  • Assist with formulating, processing, manufacturing and packaging of ice cream, operate, tear down, clean and reassemble all equipment used in ice cream manufacturing
  • Assist with formulating, processing, manufacturing and packaging of culture products produced at the Creamery
  • Operate, tear down, clean and reassemble all equipment used in the manufacturing of culture products
  • Assist with processing, packaging, and standardizing all fluid milk products produced at the Creamery
  • Operate, tear down, clean and reassemble equipment used in fluid milk production
  • Properly inventory all ingredients labels and finished products as required by each area in the Creamery on a monthly basis
  • Fill out and monitor all charts which are required for milk pasteurization
  • Make corrections as necessary
  • Report any problems to Creamery Manager
  • Assist the Manager in research projects and the annual Penn State Ice Cream Short Course
  • Drive delivery truck as needed and receive incoming products into the plant
  • Train students enrolled in Food Science the principals of Dairy Products Processing
  • Operate the can washing machine and milk packaging machines
  • Keep can washing area in a neat and orderly fashion
  • Perform minor painting and maintenance duties as directed by Manager
  • Operate paper carton machine; perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs, such as replacing fuses, to paper carton packaging
  • Operate can filling equipment, as required
  • Assist with the daily cleaning of milk processing and packaging equipment; assure that equipment is properly reassembled after cleaning
  • Check liquid level gauges; receive milk, read amount of skimmed milk required to obtain specified fat content level
  • Standardize milk by obtaining fat test reading and figure amount of skimmed milk required to obtain specified fat content level
  • Test butterfat content using Babcock method, as required
  • Oversee pasteurizing process insuring that products are heated to specified temperature and held for required period of time
  • Obtain bacteria culture and inoculate milk products to start culturing process, as required
  • Divert milk to other manufactured dairy product areas as directed
  • Assure the sanitation of all equipment; assure that water temperature is at least 180 F to ensure sterile conditions

Job Requirements: Requires the use of commercial English, grammar and arithmetic such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including decimals and fractions; simple use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings, specifications, schedules, wiring diagrams, together with the use of adjustable measuring instruments, graduates and the like requiring interpretation in their various applications; or the posting, preparation, interpretation, use and checking of reports, forms, records and comparable data. 2 to 3 years of effective experience.

Work Schedule:10:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m.

Days Off:Saturday, Sunday

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
