A Brief Overview
The Director Strategic Portfolio Planning plays a pivotal role in shaping and executing the strategic direction of our organization. This leadership position requires a visionary thinker who can identify, plan, and oversee key initiatives that drive growth, innovation, and long-term success. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with senior leadership, cross-functional teams, and external partners to drive strategic priorities and ensure alignment with the company's mission and goals.
This role is responsible for managing the Portfolio Relationship Managers (PRM) who manage the domain level portfolio of both ideas and project. This role is charged with brainstorming both short-term and long-term milestones and goals for strategic initiatives. This role ensures the organization's initiatives are in line with its visions whether it's a one-time project or the cultivation of partnerships. Responsibilities include proposals, reporting, budgeting, or program development directly or through the PRMs. This role oversees a team of individuals. This position requires strong leadership skills along with excellent verbal and oral communication. It is crucial that this role is able to engage their staff and allow them to take ownership of the company's mission.
The Director Strategic Portfolio Planning is a key member of the senior management team of the Digital and Technology Services Department and member of the Digital and Technology Executive Committee (DTEC), acting as a team to provide overall leadership for all DTS functions supporting CHOP. The Director Strategic Portfolio Planning collaborates with the AVP Customer Success, PMO Sr Director, CIO and ACIOs to strategize, manage, integrate and coordinate the overall DTS direction.
The Director Strategic Portfolio Planning must maintain up-to-date knowledge of technology standards, industry trends emerging technologies, and implementation best practices by participating in relevant forums and reading widely. This role has responsibility to ensure complete alignment of their portfolio at CHOP, direct creation of SLAs, and organizational structure and process to support consistent service delivery.
In conjunction with the AVP of Customer Success, the Director Strategic Portfolio Planning acts as a liaison between DTS and CHOP executive leadership and clinicians creating business strategies to achieve alignment with technology capabilities and organizational roadmaps. In this role, the Director Strategic Portfolio Planning strives to ensure that technology meets the requirements of the business and clinical functions of CHOP.
The Director Strategic Portfolio Planning can represent the AVP of Customer Success as needed at any meeting and functions as an executive leader at CHOP participating in the CEO Council and other meetings as appropriate and, as such, exhibits executive behaviors at all times.
The Director Strategic Portfolio Planning manages a comprehensive and diverse set of project domain teams, vendor relations, processes and methodologies. They align with senior executives / clinicians and share the responsibility for ensuring overall business performance, departmental human resources and client satisfaction. The Director Strategic Portfolio Planning ensures compliance with all CHOP policies and procedures while fostering patient safety, championing information security and promoting transformational innovation.
The five key roles of a Director of Strategic Portfolio Planning are: Strategic Planning, Initiative Management, Cross-functional Collaboration, Performance Monitoring, and Risk Management. In addition to these key roles, the Director may also be involved in financial analysis, budgeting, stakeholder engagement, and reporting to senior leadership and the board of directors. This role plays a pivotal role in driving organizational growth and success by ensuring that strategic goals are translated into actionable plans and executed effectively.
The Director of Strategic Portfolio Planning is a well-rounded leader who can navigate the complexities of strategic planning and execution while effectively communicating and collaborating with others to achieve the organization's objectives.
The Director of Strategic Portfolio Planning will work closely with the Senior Director of the PMO with the understanding that a project initiative is a specific, time-bound effort aimed at achieving well-defined objectives, while a strategic initiative is a broader, long-term effort aligned with an organization's strategic goals and designed to address significant challenges or opportunities. Project initiatives are often components of strategic initiatives, with the latter providing the overarching framework for an organization's strategic direction.

What you will do
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and refine the organization's strategic plan, in collaboration with senior leadership, to set clear objectives, priorities, and performance metrics.
  • Initiative Development: Identify and assess potential strategic initiatives, projects, and partnerships that align with the organization's strategic goals.
  • Project Oversight: Lead cross-functional teams in the planning, execution, and monitoring of strategic initiatives, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
  • Risk Management: Anticipate potential challenges and risks associated with strategic initiatives and develop proactive mitigation plans.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including senior executives, board members, partners, and industry influencers.
  • Data Analysis: Utilize data-driven insights to inform decision-making, measure progress, and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Resource Allocation: Optimize resource allocation by identifying and prioritizing high-impact initiatives and allocating budgets and personnel accordingly.
Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Master's Degree Preferred
Experience Qualifications
  • At least eight (8) years of progressive leadership experience in strategic planning, project management, or a related role. Prior experience in a director-level position is highly desirable. Required

Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience managing client engagement model between DTS and internal client departments, with primary objective to build and maintain productive working relationships with client departments (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrated experience managing senior partnering relationships with various types of organizations (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage relationships at the enterprise level and to understand implications to the company and its business environment, including the ability to understand highly complex business initiatives/drivers (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrated ability to understand impacts to strategic plans that will drive business decisions, changes to the business environments, influence technology solutions, organizational cultures, and business relationships (Required proficiency)

  • Information Security Requirements
  • Understand and comply with all enterprise and DTS departmental information security policies, procedures and standards. (Required proficiency)
  • Support the integration of information security in the development, design, and implementation of Hospital Technology Resources that process, transmit, or store CHOP information. (Required proficiency)
  • Support all compliance activities related to state, federal regulatory requirements, healthcare accreditation standards, and all other applicable regulations that govern the use and disclosure of patient, financial, or other confidential information. (Required proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
  • Project Management Certification (PMP) - Project Management Institute - upon hire - Preferred
