Position Summary

The Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for defining the controls and systems integration strategy serving Steris' manufacturing operations. This position will assess current operational controls systems technologies, as well as business systems, while helping to develop a strategy to support and upgrade current and new operations. This role will develop the controls strategy, roadmaps, and define action plans needed to execute. The Senior Controls Engineer is expected to assess and manage the external supply base, identify suitable partners, and develop key relationships with controls technology suppliers. They will also integrate and support in-house designed assembly solutions developed by the manufacturing team. S/he will manage the long term controls program for key operational areas and drive the completion of projects contributing to the overall strategy across the defined operational footprint. After integration of new controls technology the Senior Controls Engineer will maintain equipment and programming key to Operational metrics. This position has a requirement of a limited amount of travel, estimated at 2 weeks a year.

What You'll Do as a Senior Controls Engineer

  • Strategy development (40%):

    • Assess the site controls systems footprint, to identify needs/opportunities to sustain and upgrade the variety of currently used controls technologies.
    • Upon completion of the assessment, develop and communicate the long-term implementation strategy, including priortizaiton of highest leverage opportunities, timing, projected costs, targeted technology partners and internal resource requirements.
    • Develop standard ways of working internally and externally for program management of controls technology projects and programs.


  • Implement the controls technology strategy through a variety of activities (60%):

    • Oversee the specification development process, establish maintenance, service, and qualification protocols of technology systems. Ensure thorough and compliant documentation is available.
    • Lead the vendor selection and capital appropriation request processes.
    • Lead all engineering, purchase, fabrication, installation and factory acceptance phases of the project implementation process.
    • Identify the skills necessary and develop the training programs required to acquire and develop operators and technicians capable running and maintaining installed equipment.
    • Develop and implement methods to monitor and measure effectiveness of implementations; lead corrective actions as applicable.
    • Collaborate with the corporate advanced engineering function to facilitate alignment and synergy with the advanced engineering strategy being deployed across STERIS.



The Experience, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Controls Engineering.
  • 8 years of experience in advanced engineering areas, including PLC/DCS controls interaction and/or automation of manufacturing lines, conveyance systems, machine interface, and software solutions.
  • 5 years project management and reporting experience.
  • Demonstrated positive impact to the business that translated to clear, bottom line results by implementing step-function changes.
  • Experience with and demonstrated skills in analyzing business needs, determining appropriate solutions and/or opportunities, developing lean implementation strategies, and deploying them.
  • Experience with deploying new technology.
  • Successful experience with effectiveness across multi-site operations.
  • Experience managing internal and external partners on significant capital programs ($1M+).

Pay range for this opportunity is$90,737.50 - $112,087.50.This position is eligible for bonus participation.

Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed. Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
