About the role/team:

The Senior Director, Bill Pay is the executive owner and leader responsible for defining and executing the long-term commercial and operational strategy for the bill pay portfolio. This individual is accountable for the P&L impact, multi-year revenue attainment, operational functionality and overall health of this business unit.

This role will work at the executive level with Corporate Payments leadership to establish and drive the strategic vision, create revenue growth, and ensure the organization achieves its overarching financial objectives.

How you will make an impact:

The Senior Director operates with broad authority and accountability across strategy, execution, and organizational development.

  • Executive Strategy and Vision:

    • Define and own the 3-5 year commercial strategy, vision, and market positioning for the bill pay portfolio, ensuring alignment with corporate financial objectives and long-term shareholder value creation.

    • Serve as the executive sponsor and most senior relationship owner for the most strategic, high-value customers and partners within the portfolio, driving sustained executive engagement and loyalty.

    • Directly impact the organization's P&L by establishing high-level financial targets, managing resource allocation, and ensuring a compelling return on investment (ROI) from all portfolio activities.

  • Team Leadership and Organizational Development:

    • Lead, mentor, and scale a team of commercial and operational leaders and specialists (including Managers and Senior Managers), fostering a culture of executive excellence, accountability, and continual high performance.

    • Be a key architect of the organization's talent strategy, ensuring the team has the necessary skills, structure, and capabilities to meet future business demands.

  • Commercial Execution and Growth:

    • Drive high-stakes negotiation and portfolio renewal strategies to maximize retention and revenue growth, personally intervening in the most complex or challenging commercial negotiations.

    • Establish and oversee a rigorous business rhythm for strategic planning, opportunity forecasting, and performance reviews, providing executive-level visibility to Corporate Payments leadership on revenue trajectory and risk.

    • Directly manage all bill pay portfolio market and through-partner business development activities, ensuring the channel strategy is optimized for penetration and share growth.

  • Cross-Functional Executive Partnership:

    • Serve as the primary executive liaison to Product, Engineering, Legal, and Finance, driving consensus and securing investment for growth campaigns and product enhancements critical to portfolio success.

    • Ensure seamless and commercially viable strategic partnerships that are essential for payment acceptance and portfolio integrity.

    • Direct the proposal, implementation, and governance of impactful, enterprise-wide customer management policies and practices.

  • Market Influence:

    • Conduct and synthesize advanced market and competitor intelligence to proactively identify and recommend disruptive strategies for portfolio innovation and competitive advantage.

    • Regularly present strategic vision, financial performance, and key results to internal Executive Leadership (VP/SVP/C-Suite) and external industry forums.

  • Travel:

    • Ability to travel up to 35% of the time for executive meetings, industry events, and team leadership

Experience you will bring:

  • Minimum of 15+ years of progressive experience in finance-related business development, strategic account management, or channel leadership, with at least 5+ years managing leaders or Directors.

  • Deep, comprehensive expertise in financial services, payment technologies, and executive-level through-partner sales processes.

  • Proven success in defining, owning, and leading the attainment of multi-year strategic objectives and demonstrable accountability for a significant revenue/P&L target.

  • Exceptional track record of building and maintaining C-level relationships with high-value customers and partners.

  • Demonstrated executive-level behaviors in driving significant organizational change, building trust, and fostering enterprise-wide accountability and collaboration.

  • Mastery in communicating and presenting complex strategies and financial results to Executive Leadership and external boards.

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan.
