UVA Health is seeking a skilled and compassionate Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) to join our rehabilitation team. This role specializes in the evaluation and treatment of patients with conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and upper extremity. The CHT will provide advanced clinical care, focusing on restoring function, reducing pain, and improving quality of life for patients recovering from injury, surgery, or chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate and treat patients with upper extremity injuries and conditions, including post-surgical rehabilitation, trauma, repetitive stress injuries, and congenital or degenerative disorders
- Develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans to improve strength, range of motion, coordination, and functional use of the upper extremity
- Fabricate and fit custom orthoses (splints) as clinically indicated
- Collaborate closely with hand surgeons, physicians, and interdisciplinary care teams to coordinate patient care
- Document patient evaluations, progress, and outcomes in accordance with clinical and regulatory standards
- Educate patients and caregivers on home exercise programs, injury prevention, and recovery strategies
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices in hand therapy and participate in continuing education
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the rehabilitation department
Required Qualifications
- Current licensure as an Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) or Physical Therapist (PT) in the applicable state
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and pathology of the upper extremity
- Minimum of 2-3 years of clinical experience in upper extremity rehabilitation
Preferred Qualifications
- Current certification as a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) through the Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC)
- Experience in outpatient orthopedic or hand therapy clinic settings
- Prior collaboration with hand surgeons or orthopedic specialty teams
- Strong patient education and communication skills
- Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy Experience: 6 months relevant experience. Licensure: Licensed to practice in Occupational Therapy in the Commonwealth of Virginia. New grads must be licensed within 6 months of hire. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires frequently bending/stooping/traveling (distance: mile). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs.
