Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (with occasional flexibility based on business needs).

Job Description:

  • As the Assistant Controller, you will need to think creatively and be comfortable overseeing the day-to-day accounting and fiscal activities for the University. You will be an active member of the Business Office team and will work closely with the Controller to ensure that all accounting compliance, principles, and regulations for the department are successfully executed. Additionally, this role is responsible for preparing the University's financial statements for internal and external audits.
  • You will thrive in this role if you like combining your accomplished accounting experience and extensive supervisory skills while improving and regulating the University's cash management system. To be successful, the applicant must possess prior accounting experience, strong critical thinking/problem-solving skills, and a proven ability to make independent decisions to support the needs of the University and its students.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • General Accounting Leadership: Responsible for general ledger; fixed assets; cash; inventory; student loan; project accounting; accounts payable; and miscellaneous accounts receivable.
  • Cash Management: Oversees the University's cash management, monitors cash flow, and maintains detailed knowledge of the State System's centralized cash management environment.

    Capitalization & Compliance: Supervises the capitalization of all University property, leases, and projects.

    Audit Liaison & Oversight: Serves as liaison to all auditors, including external auditors, internal auditors, the Pennsylvania Auditor General, and the Pennsylvania Department of Treasury. Provides oversight of the University's annual financial statement audit, Single
  • Audit (formerly A-133), internal audits/reviews, and NCAA Agreed-Upon Procedures.

    Audit Response Management: Coordinates management responses and corrective actions to audit reports and findings, working closely with the Controller, Chief Financial Officer, Technology, and other staff.

    Internal Controls & Compliance: Maintains a system of internal control to ensure all fiscal operations comply with the Commonwealth, Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Board of Governors, and federal policies, laws, and regulations, as

    well as GASB standards.
  • Risk & Insurance: Handles all insurance claims for incidents and accidents on campus; maintains a productive relationship with the Bureau of Risk Management.

    Systems & Implementations: Coordinates accounting and reporting systems with Information Technology, including providing functional support for system implementations and testing.

    ERP & SIS Expertise: Maintains thorough working knowledge of the institution's financial management ERP system and student information system; ensures staff have the required knowledge for their areas of responsibility.

    Transaction Integrity: Ensures accurate and timely posting of transactions to the general ledger while safeguarding fiscal integrity in accordance with GAAP and University policies and procedures.

    Special Projects: Provides financial expertise to special projects involving institution-wide initiatives.

    Standards & Guidance: Instructs staff on accounting issues and new directives from NACUBO and PASSHE. Stays current on, implements, and provides guidance for new pronouncements of accounting standards and other regulatory issues affecting accounting

    procedures, financial reporting, governmental funding, and audit issues.
  • Reporting: Develops and prepares monthly and annual financial reports and dashboards.

    Policy Development: Reviews and recommends new and/or revised policies related to college finances and student accounts.

    Team Leadership: Leads the financial and student accounts staff. Identifies and implements professional development opportunities; trains staff on new accounting procedures and system enhancements.

    Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:


  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field preferred.
  • Certification: Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required.


Required Experience:

  • 7+ years of accounting experience with increasing responsibility
  • 5+ years of full-charge supervisory experience, preferably in a higher-education, unionized environment.
  • 1+ years of experience with financial statement preparation and overseeing annual financial statement audits and Single Audit (A-133).
  • Controls & Policy: Well-developed skills in establishing internal controls and accounting/business policies and procedures. Knowledge of governmental/fund accounting preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Microsoft Word (tables, reports, mail merge), Excel (formulas, pivot tables, charts), Microsoft Teams. Experience with Banner helpful. Experience using relational databases such as SAP and Banner.

    Management & Soft Skills: Management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, trust, patience, professionalism, sensitivity, and discretion in handling confidential information.

    Execution: Ability to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines with strong organizational and priority-setting skills.
  • Judgment: High level of independent judgment, discretion, and business acumen.
  • Communication: Excellent oral and written communication skills, including grammar and composition; ability to communicate comfortably with staff, students, colleagues, and external constituents.
  • Other: Self-motivated and highly detail-oriented problem solver with strong analytical skills. Valid driver's license. Able to read, write, and comprehend English and follow verbal instructions.
