Description

Note: APA operates on a 37.5-hour work week with one-hour lunch breaks each day. APA sets salaries based on several considerations, including years of relevant experience, level of education, and previous staff and/or governance experience at APA.

The Director, Precollege and Undergraduate Education is responsible for supporting teachers of psychology and communicating the value of the discipline. A goal is to develop initiatives that apply psychological science, including the scholarship on teaching and learning for those teaching in high school, undergraduate, or graduate level education. The director promotes the value of psychology education, and supports teaching excellence through research in learning science, cognitive psychology, and educational psychology.

Education and Experience:

This position is ideal for an experienced classroom teacher and education leader with evidence of scholarship focused on teaching and learning (SoTL) and who is passionate about bridging psychological science with classroom practice to enhance student learning outcomes and teacher effectiveness across all levels of education.

Education:



  • Doctorate (PhD or PsyD) in psychology,
  • Expertise in the scholarship of teaching and learning


Experience:



  • 10+ years of teaching experience working in higher education.
  • 10+ years of experience with course design, instruction, instructional technology, and assessment at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • 10+ years of experience implementing professional development opportunities for students and/or early-career faculty in teaching practices.


Skills:



  • Established record of expertise in the scholarship in teaching and learning, including publications, presentations, or funded projects.
  • Evidence of translating Science of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) findings into practical strategies for educators across K-12 and/or higher education.
  • Experience leading or participating in faculty development initiatives that promote evidence-based teaching.
  • Evidence of ability to design and implement educational programs informed by psychological science.
  • Experience in strategic planning, project management, and program evaluation.
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational environments.
  • Strong communication skills for engaging diverse audiences (educators, researchers, policymakers).
  • Experience advocating for evidence-based teaching practices in higher education and beyond.
  • Ability to represent APA as a thought leader in applying psychological science to education.


Computer Skills Required:



  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, email and calendar systems, statistical software, online collaboration tools, and virtual meeting platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including familiarity with artificial intelligence-enhanced tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot) and other digital productivity applications.


Responsibilities:



  • Works with the Senior Director, and members of the Psychology Team, to collaborate and partner with educators, administrators, researchers, and policymakers to ensure best practices with regard to the psychology curriculum.
  • Create opportunities to advance the application of psychological science across all levels of education.
  • Assist the Senior Director and Staff Liaison to shift the priorities of TOPSS and CABE as thought partners rather than prioritizing development of products and resources.
  • Develop initiatives to ensure that faculty at every educational level receive the support and resources they need to excel in teaching and support student learning.
  • Develop curriculum that illustrates the value of psychological science to support student overall well-being through science-based curriculum development.
  • Create initiatives that focus on supporting a future ready workforce that ensures student success in the classroom and in their future careers.
  • Supervises the undergraduate and graduate interns working with the PCUE team.
  • Work with the Senior Director to help support APA's Business Innovation and Growth Office with identifying and executing revenue generating initiatives in the education focused marketplace.
  • Other duties as assigned.
