Title: Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Coordinator

Degree Requirement: Associate's degree+ in engineering or architecture, or equivalent work experience. (Understanding of the interaction of civil, mechanical and electrical construction disciplines as it relates to project management a plus.)

Primary function of a Virtual Design and Construction Coordinator: Preconstruction and construction phase support providing accurate and precise 3D models of new and existing installations to facilitate safe, productive, quality construction of large-scale environmental projects. Share expertise to guide our company's efforts to implement a fully integrated Building Information Modeling (BIM) practice and utilization.

Typical Duties include but at not limited to:



  • Develop a complete model including the following items:


    • Overlay all trades for initial clash detection/conflicts.
    • Develop site plans showing all excavations ensuring accurate cut and fill quantities.
    • Construct complete civil, architectural, structural, process mechanical and MEP systems virtual models showing routing of all piping, ductwork, plumbing, miscellaneous metals and electrical raceways. All existing plant as-builts are included ensuring clash detection identifies all potential issues. Produce isometric drawings, 2D plans, and elevation cuts for the field.
    • Develop all structures in conjunction with the site plan and mechanical/electrical system layouts and routing highlighting all penetrations.
    • Incorporate all approved RFI's, clarifications, and other contractual revisions ensuring models are 100% up to date.
    • Develop 3D models utilizing drawings, sketches, and design skills. Check and navigate for interferences and constructability in 3D models. Complete models include bill of materials for all items as well as clash detection for interdisciplinary coordination. This includes all vendor-related block references based on approved submittals.


  • Track model from inception to 100% design, while being able to track quantity growth between each design stage. Models are exported into excel sheets for tracking.
  • Ensure all equipment and ancillary items meet proper distance per building codes.
  • Bring lessons learned from traditional BIM markets to the evolving heavy civil BIM market.
  • Coordinate/manage BIM scope and workload with the engineering team(s) as well as other technical members utilizing CAD.
  • Oversee operation, maintenance, and enhancements of BIM system.
  • Coordinate, monitor, and provide BIM support to fulfill contractual requirements.
  • Work with BIM professionals in our other regions to develop and implement BIM standards tuned to the unique requirements of underground design and construction projects.
  • Report project progression updates and/or issues.
  • Provide lessons learned throughout the project.
  • Complete as-builts by utilizing Request for Information (RFI) forms, Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and red-marked drawings from construction to develop "Conformed to Construction Records" as required.
  • Participate in project meetings as required.
  • Check design for consistency, safety, operability and maintenance requirements before submitting to checking.
  • Resolve checked drawings; prove and understand provided comments.
  • Create models to support Business Development pursuits.
  • Augment models developed by outside sources to implement the use of a 5D estimating solutions.
  • Suggest and assist with the continuing development of new and emerging technologies.
  • Prepare final drawings based on prior work examples and other input from designers, engineers and project managers.
  • Maintain and improve knowledge of drafting techniques, standards, practices, and engineering procedures.
  • Build and maintain sound, trusting relationships with co-workers, owners, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • This position will collaborate with our engineering team and develop our designs, document our deliverables, and enhance our work product through the value of 3D modelling.
  • Assist the Director of Preconstruction, Preconstruction Manager, Estimating staff and Business Development/Marketing with project pursuits and preconstruction development. Primarily responsible for creating project models and augmenting provided models from outside sources.
  • Leverage the value of BIM to enhance the development, analysis and most importantly the documentation of our design deliverables.


Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:



  • Associate's degree+ in engineering or architecture, or equivalent work experience. (Understanding of the interaction of civil, mechanical and electrical construction disciplines as it relates to project management a plus.)
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience as a modeling practitioner working with project engineers, project managers, or general contracting business development teams.
  • Self-starter with strong analytical and problem-solving skills who understands the tasks required to deliver projects and assignments successfully. Must be able to solve technical challenges while developing new workflows.
  • Genuine interest in developing and progressing digital delivery with a propensity for learning.
  • Excellent communication skills; strong collaborator interested in working closely with teams functioning as a team player.
  • Background in Autodesk tools and systems including Autodesk Civil3D, Revit, , Autodesk Navisworks, Collaboration for Revit (BIM360 Design) Bluebeam Revu Extreme, an all Microsoft office products.
  • Knowledge and appreciation for best practices in model-based design (BIM) protocols, standards, and software.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop BIM drawings from verbal instructions, preliminary layouts, sketches, and project standards.
  • Must be able to exercise independent judgment using technical knowledge.
  • Strong attention to detail with emphasis on organization.
  • Ability to work under a deadline.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and other technical drawings and documents.
  • General knowledge of building practices, systems and assemblies.
  • Technical writing abilities.
  • Highly desirable experience includes engineering application experience, specifically:
  • Experience in various infrastructure project types including earthwork, drainage, highways/road design, rail, tunnels, water and waste water treatment, pipelines, etc.
  • Experience in construction layout and surveying methods, equipment (Total Station) and coordinate systems, a plus.
