The Design Manager supports client/owner relationships and leads design teams in projects. The Design Manager is engaged throughout the project lifecycle (pursuit, proposal, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and support). The Design Manager will understand and advocate for the client/owner requirements to scope and deliver constructable design packages. This position will be seen as the technical leader and design decision maker externally with the client and internally with the design teams. The Design Manager owns satisfactory delivery and quality of design scope across all of Interstates' design disciplines.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Supports the development and growth of client/owner relationships through sales focused trips and presentations.
  • Reviews and analyzes received information, develops concept designs, discovers client design goals and determines design scope to deliver design proposals and support broader estimating efforts.
  • Understanding the scope of the project's work by reviewing project specifications, contracts, and agreements and any clarifications and exceptions in the proposal.
  • Acts as the primary contact with the client/owner to establish design parameters, answer technical questions, and problem solve design solutions by understanding scope and goals.
  • Defining the deliverables necessary to achieve the project scope and aligning the design team to deliver a constructible design that meets the client/owner needs and budget constraints.
  • Collaborating with the Project Manager to set project goals, develop the project schedule, solve project issues, and complete progress updates including tracking constraints, and communicating with the team.
  • Managing design subcontractors in partnership with the Project Manager.
  • Providing technical leadership for the project internally and externally by regular supporting and mentoring of all design team members.
  • Identifies gaps in skills or capabilities of the project team and aligns resources or training to fill the gaps.
  • Owning the delivery of all Interstates' design scope for the project by setting direction and managing the design objectives throughout the project.
  • Owning the final quality of Interstates' design deliverables by ensuring quality processes, audits, and reviews are completed to internal standards and external satisfaction.
  • Engaging in Construction Administration activities to support the client/owner and construction team in executing the project in alignment with the design intent.
  • Maintaining client/owner relationships by regularly checking in with them during and outside of active projects
  • Fulfills these expectations on multiple projects at the same time.


Secondary Responsibilities:



  • Owns and drives the Interstates Collaborative Design Process, to ensure the team has all required information and data to properly support and execute the design process and executes the gated design reviews in alignment with standard
  • Completes multiple design deliverables as required for execution of the project
  • Manages the scope of the project as the PM for design-only projects

Experience and Education: A Design Manager must have expertise in one or more of Interstates' design disciplines and basic knowledge in all of Interstates' design disciplines. Typically, the Design Manager must have at least four years of experience working directly with clients/owners on design projects.

Travel: Occasional site travel may be required. Travel will vary according to business requirements. Travel should not exceed 35% of your time.

Compensation: The pay range for this position is $93,100 to $116,300+ benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by the experience and education required, and level of responsibility. The range posted for this role represents a range that Interstates, in good faith, believes it is willing to pay at the time of this posting. The pay is determined by job related skills, training, education, and experience.
