The Department of Student Life at West Virginia University is currently seeking applications for a (Hybrid) Assistant Director of Chapter & Council Services.

About the Opportunity

The Assistant Director of Chapter & Council Services supports the mission of Fraternity and Sorority Life at West Virginia University by providing leadership, guidance, and support for fraternity and sorority chapters and governing councils. This role emphasizes chapter coaching, council advising, intentional educational initiatives, and engagement strategies that promote student learning, excellence, and a values-based fraternal experience.

This position is designed to be strategically flexible so the responsibilities in areas such as leadership development, educational programs, and risk management. The role can be calibrated to align with the strengths and professional expertise of the successful candidate. Evaluation will focus on programmatic outcomes, contributions to community goals, and collaborative impact.

The Assistant Director works independently under the supervision of the Director, contributes to the department's strategic direction, and may supervise graduate assistants or other support personnel.

What You'll Do

Chapter & Council Advising & Support

  • Advise one or more fraternity and sorority governing councils and support council leadership development, strategic planning, and operational effectiveness.
  • Provide individualized chapter coaching that fosters growth, accountability, recruitment/intake support, and risk-aware decision making.
  • Serve as a primary resource for chapters navigating policy interpretation, accountability practices, and organizational development.

Leadership Development & Educational Programming

  • Lead or co-lead intentional educational initiatives that promote student learning, leadership identity development, community engagement, values affirmation, and ethical decision-making.
  • Coordinate or support signature FSL educational experiences such as retreats, officer trainings, workshops, and ongoing learning series.
  • Support new member education and chapter officer transitions in alignment with best practices.

Risk Management & Community Standards

  • Partner with campus partners to provide risk management education, harm reduction strategy support, and resources that enhance safety and wellbeing.
  • Serve as a consultant for chapters on risk planning, compliance with university and national organizational expectations, and proactive prevention.
  • Participate in accountability processes as appropriate, offering developmental outcomes and coaching when needed.

Student Learning & Engagement

  • Shape and implement strategies that foster meaningful student learning and engagement through programming and leadership opportunities.
  • Use assessment data to inform program refinement, demonstrate impact, and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
  • Promote involvement in fraternity and sorority life initiatives that expand civic, leadership, and community engagement.

Supervision & Strategic Contribution

  • Supervise graduate assistants or student staff as assigned, fostering professional growth and contributing to program delivery.
  • Collaborate with the Director and other staff to help shape the strategic direction of the Fraternity & Sorority Life office.
  • Contribute to FSL assessment reporting, divisional reporting, and articulating outcomes for stakeholders.

Collaboration & Partnership

  • Develop and sustain productive relationships with campus partners (e.g., student conduct, WellWVU, leadership development, student engagement) to advance shared educational goals.
  • Maintain professional relationships with national fraternity and sorority organizations and leverage external resources and best practices.

Operational & Administrative Support

  • Assist in planning logistical aspects of programs, trainings, retreats, and council events.
  • Support budget management, communication planning, and documentation related to chapters and councils.
  • Participate in office operations, meetings, and duties as necessary; evening and weekend work required.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Leadership Studies, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience in fraternity and sorority life, student leadership development, or closely related functional areas.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to advise student leaders and deliver educational programming.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and judgment skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience advising fraternity and sorority councils.
  • Background in risk management education, harm reduction programming, or accountability support.
  • Experience supervising graduate assistants or student staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to use assessment for program enhancement.
  • Familiarity with national fraternity and sorority organizations and contemporary FSL challenges/opportunities.
