Assistant Accelerator Physicist

Brookhaven National Laboratory
United States, New York, Upton
20 Brookhaven Ave (Show on map)
Apr 01, 2026

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The C-A Department has an opening for an Assistant Accelerator Physicist to develop Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) and digital twins into the accelerator control systems, improve the beam quality of the beams delivered to the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL), and work on developing AI/ML as part of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC)-BeamAI group. This work will include developing physics models of the C-AD accelerator systems, performing beam experiments to test those models, and work on researching new methods to optimize the quality of the various particle beams used by NSRL and eventually used by the EIC. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Develop precise online physics models of the suite of particle accelerators in C-AD
* Plan, carry out, and publish independent and impactful research developing state-of-the-art AI/ML based controls for the C-AD particle accelerators
* Present results at scientific workshops and conferences.
* Lead and perform beam experiments and analyze data
* Coordinate and collaborate with existing group members.
* Become an independent operator of the C-AD accelerators

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Ph.D. in Accelerator Physics, Physics, or related area and 2 years post-PhD experience
* Experience with software development in a research environment
* Experience with fitting and correlating measurements
* Knowledge & experience in statistical data analysis
* Knowledge and working understanding of particle beam physics
* Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills
* A record of working successfully with other scientists and engineers
* Research experience demonstrated through publications and/or presentation

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Experience working in a physics/particle accelerator research environment
* Experience performing beam experiments at a particle accelerator
* Experience simulating synchrotrons using standard modeling tools (e.g., xsuite or Bmad)
* Knowledge of accelerator instrumentation
* Experience working in UNIX/Linux environments
* Knowledge of magnet design and methods of measuring magnetic fields
* Knowledge and experience working with python in a research environment

OTHER INFORMATION:
* Work arrangement: On-Site, some travel required
