Assistant Athletics Director/Athletics Head Coach

This position is an on-campus, full-time, exempt, supervisory, 12-month appointment based in Champaign, Illinois with an annual salary of $68,802.76.

The Assistant Athletics Director/Athletics Head Coach is responsible for planning and directing the recruitment, conditioning, training, and performance of student athletes, along with the fiscal program management, for Parkland College's NJCAA Division II Midwest Athletic Conference (MWAC) Intercollegiate sports program. This position will also serve as the Assistant Athletics Director and function as an academic coach to all student athletes.

Weekend and evening hours are necessary including a flexible daily schedule. On call 24-hours per day to answer inquiries from and provide after-hours support for prospective students/athletes, parents, and coaches. This position will work closely with students, parents, faculty, staff, and community members and will direct a staff of Assistant Coaches.

Essential Job Functions:



  • Recruit student-athletes according to National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Midwest Athletic Conference (MWAC), and Parkland College Athletics Department guidelines.
  • Serve as an academic coach to student athletes in all sports; monitor team member's academic status, assist with placement of players to four-year colleges, and ensure adherence to NJCAA rules and regulations.
  • Ensure student athletes adhere and comply with NAIA and NCAA transfer rules and regulations.
  • Assist student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility in completing their program at Parkland or transferring to another institution.
  • Manage team budget and assist the Director with planning the budget for Athletics, maintain financial records, and review financial reports; aid in the management and audit of athletic club accounts; assist with the oversight of athletic clubs fundraising activities.
  • Plan and schedule league and non-league contests, transportation, trainings, and practice sessions.
  • Develop and implement game strategy and position assignments.
  • Compile, maintain, and report all game scores and statistics as required by the NJCAA and MWAC.
  • Plan and contribute to the team's technical training sessions; teach proper technique and training methods.
  • Organize and implement academic success programs, particularly through weekly meetings, that closely monitor the academic progress of new, transfer, and at-risk student athletes.
  • Implement a monitoring and reporting program for assessing student-athlete course performance.
  • Serve as a positive role model creating an environment for the team that promotes good sportsmanship, open communication, team discipline, and respect.
  • Assist and guide student-athletes during the pre-registration process through monitoring and record keeping of their class schedules for special athletic needs, such as travel, practice times, and transfer needs.
  • Serve as campus liaison to faculty and staff, in particular the staff of Enrollment Services and Counseling Services.
  • Communicate with other Parkland coaches and track the admissions status, assessment, and pre-registration of all new student-athletes.
  • Assist the Director with eligibility, through the NJCAA Online Eligibility site and with continuing eligibility status for compliance with NJCAA and Parkland College academic standards.
  • Plan and implement orientation workshops for all entering and transfer student athletes.
  • Supervise and assist with the hiring of full-time and part-time staff.
  • Assist other coaches in the recruitment process of student-athletes by sharing academic information and by meeting prospective student athletes for campus visits.
  • When needed, drive teams to away contests.
  • Promote the sports program through community events, fundraising, and marketing.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, Secondary Education, Kinesiology, or related field.
  • Three (3) years coaching experience at the high school level or above.
  • Prospective new hires will successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment criminal background check with fingerprinting. The background check review includes, but is not limited to, exclusionary offenses per the Illinois School Code and Title IV of the Higher Education Act.
  • Available 24-hours per day for on-call inquiries and provide after-hours support for prospective students/athletes, parents, and coaches.
  • Organizational skills, planning and budgeting experience, and the ability to work with students of diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
