At McGraw Hill we create best-in-class, next-generation learning platforms that are used by millions of students and educators worldwide from kindergarten through graduate school. Our goal is to accelerate student success through intuitive and effective learning tools and content that maximize a teacher's time and a student's learning experience. We do all of this in a supportive, collaborative environment where you can grow your career in a way that fits into your life.

How can you make an impact?

The Lead UX Designer, Systems & Experience is a hybrid role within the Digital Center of Excellence (COE), responsible for both maintaining and evolving the enterprise design system and delivering hands-on UX design for key initiatives. This role blends system-level architectural thinking with day-to-day product design execution, ensuring scalable, accessible, and consistent user experiences across McGraw Hill's digital platforms, including Adobe Experience Manager (AEM). The designer operates with significant autonomy, collaborates closely with product and engineering partners, and demonstrates strong executive presence when presenting UX strategy and design recommendations.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

What you will be doing:

  • Maintain and evolve the enterprise design system (component standards, usage guidelines, scalable UX patterns); partner with engineering to implement/refine components via tools like Storybook and GitHub; establish and uphold accessibility standards (WCAG, ARIA) across all components and patterns; drive adoption of system-based design practices across UX, product, and engineering teams.
  • Lead UX design for key features, workflows, and cross-platform experiences; create user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs aligned with internal standards through project-oriented and systemic design flow reviews; define end-to-end user journeys for complex workflows and multi-step interactions.
  • Conduct design reviews, iterate based on feedback, and ensure high-quality execution across all deliverables; apply system thinking to daily design work to ensure consistency, scalability, and alignment with the broader design system.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, researchers, and content strategists to deliver cohesive, user-centered experiences; partner with the UX Manager to evolve system patterns and ensure alignment with enterprise UX strategy.
  • Clearly communicate design rationale, tradeoffs, and strategic recommendations with strong executive presence; influence cross-team decision-making by advocating for scalable, user-centered design solutions.
  • Mentor designers on system-based practices and accessibility standards; contribute to design critiques, team rituals, and continuous UX process improvement; serve as a subject-matter expert on design systems, component governance, and AEM-aligned UX patterns; identify opportunities to improve cross-product experiences and streamline design workflows.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Design, HCI, Computer Science, or related field; preferred Master's degree or advanced accessibility certification.
  • Minimum 7+ years of UX experience with deep expertise in design systems, component architecture, and enterprise-scale platforms; required experience working with Adobe Experience Manager (AEM).
  • Extensive experience leading and executing within design systems and hands-on UX design; advanced proficiency coordinating internal system communication across Figma, Storybook, development teams, and AEM authoring environments; ability to balance system governance with day-to-day product design needs.
  • Advanced understanding of UX architecture, scalable component design, and system-based UX patterns; strong proficiency with accessibility standards (WCAG, ARIA) and inclusive design frameworks.
  • Proven ability to communicate with confidence and professionalism in high-visibility, enterprise-level environments; ability to operate independently and lead UX efforts for major features or workflows.
  • Experience with multiplatform design systems or enterprise-wide UX governance; familiarity with AEM component models, templates, and authoring workflows; experience with design tokens, semantic component structures, or multi-brand systems; travel requirement up to 25%.
