Department Summary

The UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program is dedicated to promoting worker health, safety, and wellbeing, and building capacity for workers and worker organizations to take action to improve working conditions. LOSH offers high-quality training and education, participatory action research, policy analysis, and worker leadership development to advance worker rights and protections. LOSH is a unit of both the Institute for Research and Labor and Employment (IRLE) and the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH).
Position Summary

The Research Associate contributes to LOSH research on worker safety and health, employment, and policy issues in California. They assist with implementing discrete research activities in support of LOSH research initiatives and in close coordination with the LOSH Research Analyst and labor and community-based partners. Responsibilities include assisting with project planning and coordination; convening meetings with project contributors; creating research tools; collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data; summarizing and presenting results for various audiences; and contributing to written reports, publications, and grant proposals. The Research Associate represents LOSH in community meetings and professional conferences and participates in LOSH organizational and staff development initiatives.


Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • Experience developing surveys and interview guides. (Preferred)
  • Experience administrating surveys, conducting interviews, and leading focus groups with workers and/or community audiences. (Required)
  • Experience securing data from publicly available sources, cleaning datasets, and preparing data for analysis. (Preferred)
  • Experience using Atlas.ti or other qualitative analysis software and experience using Qualtrics, REDCap and/or other programming surveys. (Preferred)
  • Experience using STATA or other statistical software. (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health, labor movement, and/or participatory action research. (Required)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of work. (Required)
  • Familiarity with government agencies responsible for creating and enforcing occupational health and safety and labor regulations. (Preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience collaborating with diverse partners from labor, community-based organizations, government agencies, and academia. (Required)
  • Available for occasional early morning, evening and/or weekend activities as determined by operational needs. (Required)
  • Possess a valid CA driver's license in good standing with access to a car for local travel and the ability to travel within California. (Required)

  • Bachelor's Degree In related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Required)
  • Master's Degree In public health or related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience. (Preferred)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
