Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the College of Education is to prepare and develop professionals invocational teacher education and information/office education through effective teaching, the dissemination of knowledge, generation and application of research, and service to the educational business communities. The College is committed to the purpose of preparing educational and business professionals who are both academically and technically proficient. The teacher education programs share the additional purposes of preparing professional educators who are reflective in practice, committed to the intellectual empowerment of others, and guided by the larger democratic purposes of American education.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Post-Master's Fellow provides professional leadership in the development, preservation, description, and accessibility of community-generated archival collections. This one-year fellowship offers an emerging archival professional the opportunity to apply advanced training in archival theory and practice to strengthen community-based archival stewardship and ensure the long-term preservation of historically significant materials. Working with a high degree of independence, the Fellow develops and implements archival policies, workflows, and descriptive standards that support sustainable collection management, discovery, and access. The position advances ECU's commitment to preserving community histories through professional archival stewardship, while fostering collaborative relationships that support the responsible care and use of archival resources.

Duties include:


  • Archival Program Development - Leads the development and implementation of archival policies, procedures, workflows, and infrastructure that support the acquisition, preservation, management, and accessibility of community-generated archival collections.

  • Archives Processing and Description - Arranges, describes, and contextualizes archival materials using professional standards and best practices; develops finding aids, metadata, and other descriptive tools to enhance discovery and access.

  • Preservation and Collections Stewardship - Assesses archival materials and recommends appropriate preservation strategies to ensure the long-term care, organization, and sustainability of physical and digital collections.

  • Community-Based Archival Collaboration - Works with community partners to identify, document, and preserve historical materials while providing guidance on archival practices, records management, and shared stewardship approaches.

  • Grant Development and Resource Enhancement - Supports the growth and sustainability of archival initiatives through grant writing, funding proposals, and identification of external resources that strengthen archival preservation and access efforts.

  • Professional Engagement and Scholarship - Contributes to the archival profession through presentations, workshops, publications, and other activities that promote best practices in archival preservation, description, and community-centered stewardship.


Contingent upon funding availability
Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Master's degree and a minimum of one year of experience as an archival intern in a community-based archive/historical society.

All degrees must be obtained from accredited institutions.
