Essential Job Duties
The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has a wide variety of strengths in forestry and natural resources management, policy and economics, environmental science and technology, wildlife and conservation biology, tree improvement, silviculture, forest biotechnology, and international forestry. The Department has over 90 full time faculty and staff, and more than 750 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. Inclusiveness and diversity are integral to our mission and commitment to excellence in education, extension, and research. Faculty, staff, and students work together with business, industry, government, community groups, and non-government organizations to address a wide range of challenges facing our state and the world. The College of Natural Resources ( CNR) at North Carolina State University is a world leader in the sustainable use of natural resources. The college's comprehensive approach to teaching, research, and service encompass the many and varied ways in which people's physical, economic, and social needs are met through the wise use of natural resources.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Being a productive member of the Tree Physiology and Ecosystem Science Lab;
  • Collaborating with USDA Forest Service EFETAC;
  • Disseminating research results through publications and presentations at scientific meetings;
  • Contributing to grant proposal writing;
  • Providing teaching and other services as required and opportunities arise.

Other Work/Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and mentoring to graduate and undergraduate students working in the lab;
  • Supervise field site activities and contribute to data collection, management and analysis;
  • Synthesize the relevant scientific literature for purposes of model development and writing of review papers;
  • Conduct independent studies of the candidate's interest related to the main project objectives; Work-related travel as required.

Requirements and Preferences






Work Schedule Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and as otherwise needed. Some weekend work may be required to coordinate with student schedules, attend scientific meetings, etc.
Department Required Skills

  • The ability to work independently and conduct original research within a team environment;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to obtain a US driver's license and operate motor vehicles safely;
  • Strong quantitative skills;
  • Ability to communicate complex information to a broad range of constituencies.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Candidates with the following will be strongly competitive:

  • Good publication record;
  • Teaching experience;
  • Supervisory experience;
  • Record of contributions to scientific meetings;
  • Evidence of quantitative skills, especially data synthesis, literature review and computer model development/application;
  • Expertise in forest productivity, carbon and water cycling studies.

Required License or Certification
Obtain a US driver's license within 90 days of employment.
