Assistant Teaching Professor in Italian (non-tenure track)

The Department of Romance Studies at Tufts University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor of Italian for the 2027-2028 academic year. The appointment will begin September 1, 2027, with the possibility of renewal.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, a strong commitment to student learning and mentoring, and a clear interest in building and expanding Italian Studies at Tufts University through curricular development, advising, and programming.

Responsibilities

- Teach six courses annually in Italian language and culture. Language instruction courses will be at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels.

- Additional teaching assignments may include courses on cultural and literary studies taught in Italian or in English.

- Contribute to curricular development and assessment activities.

- Serve as academic advisor to undergraduate students.

- Participate in initiatives that support student recruitment, retention, and engagement.

- Contribute to cultural programming, outreach efforts, and other co-curricular activities that promote the study of Italian language and culture.

- Serve on university and departmental committees.


  • M.A. in Italian or a closely related field required; Ph.D. (or A.B.D. status) preferred.
  • Native or near-native fluency in Italian and English.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching college-level Italian language and culture courses in the United States.
  • Experience teaching Italian language courses at the elementary and intermediate levels; experience teaching advanced Italian courses preferred.
  • Experience developing instructional materials, assessments, and learning activities for language courses. Experience developing and/or implementing project-based and/or task-based curricula is preferred.
  • Command of instructional technology and digital tools for language learning.
  • Evidence of creative pedagogical practice reflecting knowledge of current methodologies in second language acquisition.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching practices and student success.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to foster supportive, collaborative, and inclusive relationships with colleagues and students.
