HJF is seeking a Sr Occupational Safety and Health Specialist to provide hazardous waste management and
compliance services to Environmental Health and Occupational Safety Department and USU under the direction of the Assistant Vice President for Health and Safety, Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration. Serves as the hazardous waste management specialist for the university 90-day central accumulation area in support of all USU work centers and personnel to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements..

This position will be in support of Uniformed Services University Environmental Health and Occupational Safety department.

  • Executes Hazardous Waste Management Plan; determines appropriate storage methods, coordinates with certified disposal company to properly package and ship hazardous waste.
  • Performs and manages hazardous waste activities to include collecting, segregating, and packaging as well as anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling exposure(s) to chemical and physical hazards. Performs inspections, training, and correction for hazardous material storage and spill prevention and readiness in support of the USU Chemical Hygiene Plan. Performs inspections of satellite accumulation areas to identify and evaluate conditions which may be hazardous to workers' health. Recommend measures to eliminate or control identified hazards.
  • Partners with Industrial Hygiene staff in evaluating, revising and documenting the University's Hazardous Waste Management program for achieving and maintaining compliance with federal, state and local regulatory requirements. Prepares and submits local, state, and federally required reports regarding university hazardous waste activities. Write and review standard operating procedures and required program documents for hazardous waste management as necessary.
  • Conducts audits of University's hazardous waste program. Coordinates work-site chemical exposure monitoring and employee medical surveillance, as appropriate. Investigates and analyzes accidents and/or incidents, identifies corrective actions, tracks implementation and reports results associated with chemical exposures.
  • Develops, coordinates and presents hazardous waste and chemical hygiene related employee training presentations. Analyzes training needs. Develops and presents training specific to the audience in consideration of program operations, culture and hazards. Provides on the spot corrective actions and training as necessary and complete customer support to include assistance with hazardous chemical storage areas, satellite accumulation areas, spill management and other hazardous waste management requirements. Provide training for USU employees and visitors as required by the Hazardous Waste Management Plan and Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Assist with industrial hygiene operations as required. Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Environmental Health and Occupational Safety.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree Required, Master's Degree preferred in Discipline of public health, biological science or safety.
  • At least 18 semester hours of basic and/or applied science coursework, chemistry, waste management, industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, environmental management, or other related science degree
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical facilities and biological research.
  • Competent skills with all Microsoft Office 2010 and Google suite programs.
  • Effectively communicate in written and oral presentation.
  • Possess strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a Joint Service environment which includes enlisted, officers, contract and civilian
    personnel.
  • Proficiency and skill in the hazardous waste operations applicable to university laboratory setting.
  • Ability to obtain local, state and federal certifications as determined necessary for proper execution of the hazardous waste management program.
  • DoD experience and/or familiarity a plus. Experience working in research and academic
    laboratory setting preferable
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust background check.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary Range for this position is $77,600-$91,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
