Under the Direction of the nurse manager and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, The RN utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; assists with surgical and cosmetic procedures as determined by patient need and may include but not limited to Mohs Micrographic excisions and repairs; assisting with BCC and SCC excisions and repairs, laser, Botox and Restylane treatments, performs laser hair removal and triages patient phone calls and messages. Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team. They are expected to be proficient in the electronic medical record (EMR) system of the Medical Center (EPIC/APeX). They are also required to adhere to the Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the Medical Center.

In collaboration with the physician and nursing staff, the RN has the clinical responsibility for maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff, and for daily operations. The RN is a team player who works closely with others and who is flexible in dealing with the changing priorities. They are a self-reliant individual who synthesizes their knowledge of practice operations to problem-solve, prioritize, and facilitate complex transactions during their daily activities. They are responsible for administering medications, assisting with a variety of procedures, practicing basic assessment of patient medical and psycho-social needs, participating in patient education, and assisting medical providers in a variety of ways. All components of nursing care will be individualized to meet the patient's physiological and psychosocial developmental level and needs.

The clinical nurse has excellent oral and written communication skills; can work well with minimal supervision in a complex, fast pace and challenging environment. They are sensitive to the needs of patients, staff, and providers at all times. This position makes a difference for patients in an outpatient care unit by providing excellent nursing care and customer service, facilitating and ensuring the accuracy of the information flow between medical, hospital staff and departments to maximize unit efficiency.   1. Sets up and maintains cleanliness of exam rooms including periodic exam room disinfection and organization and removal of expired supplies.

  2. Performs intake process and engages and provides for patient's physical and emotional privacy.

  3. Provides in in reach and outreach to support practice quality initiatives and to support the model of population management.

  4. Prepares for and instructs patients about specific diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and treatments.

  5. Assists as needed with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and treatments, such as vaccines and injections.

  6. Assists in complex medical procedures such as office Manual Uterine Aspiration, hysteroscopy, cystoscopy, and urodynamics testing.

  7. Obtains specimens and performs Point of Care Testing as directed. Performs QA/QC on CLIA waived tests and reports any tests out of QA range to supervisor.

  8. Uses appliances and equipment correctly and maintains safe practice.

  9. Evaluates and documents patients' responses to nursing care in the electronic medical record, including pre/post procedures and treatments. Uses knowledge of cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process in evaluating care for all ages of patients.

  10. Practices basic assessment and applies communication skills for the purpose of patient care and education.

  11. Administers and documents the administration of medication while maintaining current knowledge of pharmacology and competency in modes of administration.

  12. Documents telephone messages and chart notes in a thorough and grammatically correct manner.

  13. Responds appropriately in emergencies. Is knowledgeable about

the contents of the code blue cart and/or the emergency kits, and can initiate and assist in CPR. Understands the procedures for medical emergencies, code blue and other emergency/disaster situations. Participates in safety drills.

  1. Complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice. Complies with activities mandated by JCAHO/Title 22/NCQA.

  2. Completes annual competency testing as specified by Ambulatory and the individual practice.

  5. Completes all tasks within assigned In Basket to include cross coverage of In Baskets of other care team and other practices across Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Uses effective communication skills with patients and staff; demonstrates proper telephone techniques and etiquette; shows sensitivity to differences of culture; demonstrates a positive and supportive manner in which patients perceive interactions as positive and supportive.

  7. Demonstrates ability to work as a team member with providers, supervisors, fellow nursing staff and clerical/administrative staff within the care team structure, with the practice team and in cross-organization relationships.

Administrative/Clerical Duties

  1. Greets and welcomes patients making eye contact and utilizing AIDET standards.

  2. Registration, check-in, and check-out of patients

  3. Determines a patient's co-pay obligation and collects it at the time of the visit; may also collect payments on patient accounts.

  4. Coordinates appointments with multiple providers as required, including new and established patient appointments using Apex and its related components. Schedules procedures and tests providing appropriate instructions to patients.

  5. Discusses practice policies and procedures with patients and referring physicians.

  6. Answers questions about provider schedules and acts as a resource to other medical center practices and ancillary service administrative staff.

  7. Adheres to the provider productivity standards as established in APEX templates for the practice and schedules appointments with the appropriate appointment type.

  8. Triages all telephone calls, screening for emergencies and routing all messages, requests for same day appointments, refill requests, etc. to the appropriate box.

  9. Covers Apex in-baskets and phone messages when other members of the team are absent.

  10. Demonstrates an ability to adjust priorities as required for smooth operation of the practice and notifies the clinical staff.

  11. Provides administrative support to providers in coordination of patient care (i.e. sending patient letters, educational materials, results of lab tests, etc.)

  12. Assists in maintaining current filing and scanning.


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of recent Registered Nurse clinical experience in an Ambulatory Clinic Setting
  • Minimum 3 years of recent Registered Nurse clinical experience with punch and shave biopsies in Dermatology Ambulatory Clinic
  • Minimum 3 years of recent Registered Nurse clinical experience in Mohs Surgery in Dermatology Ambulatory Clinic
  • Minimum 1 year of recent experience in Laser Hair Removal Treatment in Ambulatory Clinic setting

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification

Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience with Quality Improvement projects
