Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Academic Affairs, led by the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, comprises the university's colleges, schools and libraries, along with other academic support and administrative units. Academic Affairs works collaboratively to strengthen ECU's culture of academic excellence in line with our mission to be a national model for student success, public service and regional transformation.
The School of Dental Medicine's mission is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and residents) and to address the oral health care needs in rural populations of North Carolina. The school meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina.

The Office of Business and Financial Affairs provides strategic leadership to the school's administrative and financial operations. The office oversees budgeting, financial planning, accounting, patient accounts, personnel administration, contract management, and special projects. Through effective stewardship of resources and implementation of administrative policies and procedures, the office supports the school's educational, clinical, and service missions.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position serves in a business support role for patients, dentists and other staff at the ECU School of Dental Medicine- Ross Hall to optimize practice policies and procedures. Reporting to the Manager of Cash Management and Claims, this position manages complex dental insurance billing, including claims, preauthorizations, denials, appeals, payment processing, and account adjustments, while training staff and identifying process improvements.
Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Submit claims, manage authorizations, review payments, and resolve billing issues (50%)
  • Manage dental accounts, insurance processing, payments, adjustments, and communications (30%)
  • Operate AxiUm, medical records, and insurance-related software systems (15%)
  • Provide administrative backup, including registration, insurance verification, and client assistance (5%)

Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Experience with insurance carrier billing procedures and protocols
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point.
