Job Summary
The Virtualization Engineer will support enterprise virtualization infrastructure, vulnerability remediation, platform upgrades, security hardening, and operational reliability across VMware and Nutanix environments. The role involves assessing virtualization platforms, implementing approved security remediation activities, maintaining platform availability, and coordinating with infrastructure, storage, backup, network, cloud, and application teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess the virtualization environment, including clusters, hypervisors, management appliances, virtual networking, datastores, templates, lifecycle status, and platform dependencies.
  • Review vulnerability findings and vendor security advisories affecting VMware and Nutanix components. Identify affected assets, business impact, remediation approaches, prerequisites, and rollback strategies.
  • Plan and execute approved upgrades, patches, firmware coordination, and secure-configuration changes while maintaining platform availability and workload integrity.
  • Administer and troubleshoot VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, and related services, as well as Nutanix AHV, Prism Central, Prism Element, and Life Cycle Manager, where applicable.
  • Support virtual machine provisioning, migration, cloning, snapshots, templates, resource pools, high availability, Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), live migration, and capacity optimization.
  • Coordinate remediation activities across Windows, Linux, storage, backup, network, and cloud teams, including guest tools, drivers, host compatibility, and application testing.
  • Validate remediation through vulnerability rescans, health checks, cluster testing, monitoring, and evidence collection. Maintain accurate records in ServiceNow or equivalent tracking systems.
  • Develop and maintain platform standards, architecture diagrams, operating procedures, remediation runbooks, implementation plans, and knowledge-transfer materials.
  • Automate routine administration and remediation tasks using PowerCLI, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, REST APIs, or equivalent tools.
  • Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, disaster recovery exercises, maintenance windows, and after-hours or on-call support as required.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of enterprise virtualization engineering or administration experience in a complex production environment.
  • Hands-on expertise with VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter, including cluster administration, high availability (HA), DRS, vMotion, virtual networking, datastores, and lifecycle management.
  • Hands-on experience with Nutanix AHV and Prism, or demonstrated ability to support both VMware and Nutanix environments.
  • Experience with hypervisor and management-plane patching, security hardening, certificate maintenance, upgrades, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Strong understanding of virtual infrastructure dependencies, including storage, SAN/NAS, backup, DNS, NTP, Active Directory, Linux, Windows, and network services.
  • Experience with change control, implementation planning, production validation, rollback planning, and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of disaster recovery, replication, backup integration, recovery point objectives (RPO), recovery time objectives (RTO), and business continuity requirements.
  • Strong troubleshooting, stakeholder communication, and independent problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with VMware Cloud Foundation, NSX, Aria Operations, HCX, or VMware Cloud on AWS.
  • Experience with Nutanix Life Cycle Manager, Flow, Files, Move, Leap, or disaster recovery solutions.
  • Automation experience using VMware PowerCLI, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, Terraform, or platform REST APIs.
  • Experience with Dell VxRail or other hyperconverged infrastructure platforms.
  • VMware VCP/VCAP, Nutanix NCP/NCM, Dell Technologies, or comparable industry certifications.
  • Experience supporting utilities, critical infrastructure, or other regulated environments.

Work Arrangement

  • Remote position within the United States.
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency (Green Card) required, subject to final verification.
  • Initial 12-month engagement, with potential extension up to 24 months.
  • Start date as soon as approved, with staggered starts possible.
  • Remote or hybrid work arrangements may be adjusted according to project requirements.
