Position Summary
The Department of Pediatrics seeks to hire a faculty member to join the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine ( GPAM) at the University of North Carolina. This position combines outpatient adolescent medicine clinical care, leadership responsibilities within the Youth Behavioral Health Hospital ( YBH), and participation in YBH clinical call coverage. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), fixed term faculty position appointed in the School of Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill.

Clinical and administrative effort will be distributed as follows:

Outpatient Adolescent Medicine

  • Provide consultative care for adolescents with a wide range of medical, behavioral, and psychosocial needs.
  • Deliver evidence-based adolescent health services within a multidisciplinary, team-based care environment.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and behavioral health professionals to support high-quality patient care.


Youth Behavioral Health Clinical Coverage

  • Provide medical care and consultation for children and adolescents receiving services at the Youth Behavioral Health Hospital.
  • Evaluate and manage acute and chronic medical conditions that arise during their stay at YBH.
  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary care teams to support patients' overall health needs and ensure appropriate medical follow-up.
  • Participate in the YBH call pool to address urgent medical concerns and provide clinical guidance related to patient care.

Youth Behavioral Health Medical Director

  • Provide physician leadership and medical oversight for healthcare services delivered within the Youth Behavioral Health Hospital
  • Develop and maintain clinical protocols and processes related to the assessment and management of patients' medical needs.
  • Collaborate with operational and clinical leadership to support quality improvement, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and program development.

As a faculty member, this person will join a program that includes board certified general pediatricians, adolescent medicine specialists, nurse practitioners, and LCSWs. This position may involve the supervision of medical residents and advanced practice providers; a successful applicant will have a history demonstrating expertise in this set of skills.

In addition to clinical programs, the division and institution have important research opportunities. Research interests in the division include the impact of social and contextual factors on health, childhood adversity, and health inequities. The Gillings School of Public Health and the Sheps Center for Health Services Research offer opportunities for broader pediatric and adolescent health research.

The GPAM division is one of the largest divisions in the Department of Pediatrics and includes Adolescent Medicine, Primary Care, Complex & Diagnostic Care, and Child Abuse pediatrics. The division has a nationally known and productive research program and faculty in addition to a long record of teaching excellence. The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina is an attractive place to live and work with great climate, schools, and both mountains and beach within a day drive.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Specific requirements for competitive applicants include being board certified/eligible in Child Abuse Pediatrics and having fellowship or equivalent post-residency training.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This position entails clinical consults in inpatient and outpatient clinics. This position would be an excellent fit for a faculty member with a strong interest in education and clinical work.
