General Notes

The Licensed Master Social Worker will be one of three social workers serving as part of an interdisciplinary, team-based program dedicated to caring for patients at the Musculoskeletal Institute, UT Health Austin, Dell Medical School.

The Division of Health Social Work serves as a centralized hub for social workers and other integrated health providers, fostering an environment that empowers professionals to improve health and enhance the well-being of patients and families in partnership with patients, families, and communities. Through cutting-edge models and comprehensive services, the division creates tangible value within the healthcare ecosystem while championing whole-person care and interprofessional collaboration. The Division of Health Social Work offers additional clinical training opportunities for individuals working towards licensure, including supervision for those pursuing their LCSW.

Purpose

The Licensed Master Social Worker role involves supporting patients in enhancing their overall functioning through case consultation, case management, evidence-based brief interventions, and psychotherapy. This is achieved using a patient-centered, collaborative approach with an interdisciplinary team to address the biopsychosocial needs of patients experiencing a range of medical and behavioral health conditions, including chronic illness, chronic pain, adjustment disorder, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct case consultations, case management, psychotherapy, and psychosocial education for patients and their support networks. Establish initial contact, introduce social work services, and assess psychosocial and support system needs. Recommend updates to care plans to improve patient function, and quality of life, and improve health-related outcomes. Collaborate with patients, caregivers, and medical teams to address psychosocial factors, such as substance use (e.g., tobacco cessation), post-surgical planning, and transportation, to enhance surgical outcomes. Maintain thorough documentation for all services rendered following organizational standards.

  • Provide psychosocial education to patients' support networks and coordinate care with families, healthcare teams, and community resources. Establish relationships with community organizations to facilitate referrals and access to services such as transportation, emergency housing, financial aid, and case management for patients with complex social and medical needs.

  • Participate in research initiatives for patient care operational improvements; participate in screening, tracking, and reporting of patient outcomes and social work interventions; provide discipline-specific knowledge to interdisciplinary teams around mental health, historically underserved patient populations, non-medical drivers of health, and innovative ways to approach chronic illness in patients.

  • Attend division meetings, integrated practice unit sessions, and continuing education opportunities to support best practices and collaboration across departments.

  • Provide occasional coverage for urgent needs when other social work team members are unavailable.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a CSWE-accredited program. Licensed as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in the state of Texas. Demonstrated strong communication and collaboration skills with a range of healthcare professionals. Exhibits a positive, compassionate, and professional attitude when engaging with patients and their families. Possesses excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, along with strong organizational and time management abilities. Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-provider practice environment.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of three (3) years of post-degree clinical experience, preferably in a healthcare setting. Proven experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team. Proficiency in evidence-based brief interventions, motivational interviewing, and a strong knowledge of community resources. Bilingual in English and Spanish is strongly preferred.

Salary Range

$62,000+ depending on qualifications
